He was a journeyman that showed that Tyson had no heart at that point in his career. If Tyson still had passion he would have beaten McBride despite his eroded skill level.
He was certainly better than McNeeley but that is damning with faint praise. His fight with Tyson was more about Iron Mike's state of mind. McBride fought six times after the Tyson bout and won just once. He was a mid-grade club fighter at best.
McBride was terrible. I remember watching that fight and he was only able to beat the worst version of Tyson ever because Tyson was so unfit and gassed out. It was a tragic example of a former great fighting on for far too long because he couldnt admit to himself that he no longer had it.
It was a fun fight. Tyson was already finished. He wasn’t going to go out on a win over some ranked or up-and-coming guy … if he won he’d just keep fighting til he lost and knew it was over.
Tyson is about to trying stay in good shape. He doesn't have motivation for boxing. Tyson knew he no longer had it. McBride was just a paycheck. He said he knew he wasn't going to win.
In hindsight he should have retired after the Etienne fight, but that convinced people that he could make big money beating up Commonwealth grade fighters.
You're being awfully kind, my friend lol! That means McBride would have lasted as long as Berbick...I really just don't see that happening. McBride sucked. Mike was done.
I think we're really, really underrating McBride here. He used to have some elite timing, took a bite and kept on ticking, never asked anyone to do anything they didn't wanna do inside the ring or outside, fought for his slice of the pie every step of the way, always eschewed fame and fortune at a high level, and never ran any pyramid schemes, learned to read when they asked him to for civic reasons, stayed away from things that were real bad, could jab.
