Agreed. Although I’ll admit I badly wanted Evander to win that fight. The thought of a guy like Douglas having the title wasn’t something that sat well with me. But I agree it would have been nice to see some effort. It was a super fight after all..
It would have been good. Obviously Holyfield showed his heart over the years would been great to see him and the Real Deal have a classic fight.
We always talk about how great Tokyo Douglas was but maybe the ignominious way he lost his title in his first defense of it reveals a lot more about the man he beat to win it.
Not really Douglas had shown his class in prior fights vs Mike Williams knocking him down 3 times with a jab, in one of the best Heavyweight jabbing exhibitions in history. And also had impressive display vs Trevor Berbick and beating Oliver McCall. Douglas came in 15 pounds heavier at 246 pounds compared to 231 pounds vs Tyson, it was clearly not the same fighter and his heart wasn't in it for whatever reason.
Literally? I remember Gary Lineaker talking about how he shat himself during a game and the other players, opposition and teammates alike, giving him some funny looks. Made me wonder if it had happened to a boxer.
It was terrible, but again we are talking about post Tokyo Douglas, who was already into "retirement mode" and literally gone fishing. After beating Tyson, Douglas was gone for good, he just didn't care.
Douglas became a multi millionaire over night and with the lawsuit going on lost any desire to train.
No they didn’t Ferg. Based on Douglas vs Tyson and the same Buster turning up for Holyfield, I would’ve picked Douglas to win. Wonder if Tyson watched fight and then thought: “I wish THAT Douglas turned up for me”.
