Keep your range and use your reach to your full advantage. Keep moving and circling. Keep on the balls of your feet and don't stand still and let him trap you against the ropes or in a corner. Keep moving so he can't close the distance and smother your punches. Keep pumping the jab. This will keep the guy off-balance. Sounds like common sense, but hit with authority early on. Don't bget complacent, but if you see a gap, hit him and hit him hard. Most guys concentrate on speed of their punches when fighting a brawler. That's fine, but if you hit him hard from the begining on the back foot, it will discourage him from throwing punches as he'll be leaving himself open to more big-punchers. He'll respect your power and try to keep his defence up more and probably lower his output and aggression. When he gets in close, don't brawl with him. He'll most likely have the advantage on the inside because he'll be able to get his punches off easier, he'll be more comfortable and aggressive inside and might be stronger than you. Tie up, reset yourself and get back to the gameplan of stick & move. Pace yourself. Don't go overtop in throwing combinations and trying to hurt the guy with combo's and get him out of their. You're going to have to be constantly moving your feet aswell as letting the jab go, so you need to pace yourself and make sure you have the endurance to do this consistantly for the whole fight. Stick to the basics. Don't overcomplicate things. As I said, keep moving, keep using the jab. Concentrate on the straight punches down the barrell which will maintain the range between you and your opponent. Keep your hands up so he doesn't see opportunities to come in and fire away thinking he can land with most/every punch. Keep a cool head. Keep focused. All the above advice is irrelevant if you don't keep reminding yourself of these points and keep focused in doing them, otherwise it will all go out the window and you will probably become flat-footed, stop moving, let your hands down and start brawling. If you get tagged, don't let the red-mist settle and try and get back and land a punch in return by going gung-ho. Settle back to your boxing. Hope this has helped a little. Let us know how you get on when you next take on a guy with a brawling style, and good luck.
The last point tommy makes may be the most important, stay calm and be sharp. Brawlers tend to get wild, if you get wild too you're playing his game.
To beat a brawler with a jab you need to have a very quality jab, because im tipping a brawler could walk through most of your jabs. To fight a brawler you need to jam him so he cant use his power and use angles. Keep your hands up high and tight guard, throw your combo then jam him or step out of range. And change your heights alot dont just stand up right becaue he will catch you all the time.
Yep pretty much sums it up they won't want to swarm you every time they cop one to the jaw. Two things you can do, 1: Jab hard and when he lifts his hands, wind up that uppercut so when he tries to get inside to swarm let go of the uppercut. Or cover his eyes with your jab by leaving it out for a bit then bring that upper cut up.
i am a tall lanky fighter and i to had that problem for a while. In the end it all comes down to footwork. Make that jab really strong. Make them really not want to hit it so you dont need to throw a **** jab a billion times and waste all your energy. This whole time keep circling them so they have to keep changing there angles. if they finally do get close to you, grab them and push off and start over. it takes a lot of practice with the foot work but you just have to remember to never stop moving! also mix it up and as your moving at random times stop and throw a good hard combination at them, then get out as quickly as you came in.
plenty of movement to wrong foot them,, step to the left then quickly move to your right nd right hand,, if you perfect the movement you shud prevail, easier said than done tho!!!!
wow great advice thanks for the help! So I broke my foot a week ago so I won't be able to report back for a while
to beat a brawler first you should have a plan ,wait for him to come to you ,stay focus don't you ever look at him eye to eye focus your eye in the chest so you can see all his movement, if you have a good punch trap him, set him up use your job then then your killer punch
I personally back up, which gets them to think they have the chance to get me on the ropes. So as soon as they rush in, I immediately throw my straight left and move to the outside.
as the brawler comes in to land on you, move back or to the side then counter practise your footwork and practise your turns whilst throwing counters, avoid getting stuck on ropes if you do grab on, dont trade with us
