Let's settle this issue because it keeps cropping up in unrelated threads. The common belief on this board is that McLellan walked around at 180lb during his pro career. Ive heard of one poster claiming he walked around at 200lb, but I havent been able to find any source for that. If McLellan did indeed walk around at 180lb, why is this regarded as anything extraordinary?

If 180lb was his comfortable out-of-camp weight then he would be about 170lb when lean and fit. Lo and behold, on boxrec (yes, yes) McLellan once fought a Steve Harvey where he weighed in at 168lb. Harvey weighed 171lb, and this fight was at super middle, so I assume McLellan didnt need any extra leeway on his weight. Meaning he was lean and ready at 168lb. Makes sense for a man who walks around at 180lb.

What doesnt make sense is the generally agreed upon "fact" that the G Man was some behemoth of a 160 pounder crushing men who were puny and diminutive compared to his size. A middleweight who walks around at 180lb really isnt a big deal, especially in the 24 hour weigh in era. Perhaps if McLellan fought at 180lb, I could see some merit to this. But most posters say, specifically, walked around at 180lb.

I think this sentiment about McLellan being a huge middleweight is due in part to beliefs of certain posters being repeated until they become part of the norm and in part to McLellan being tall for his weight class while also looking quite big. On the first point I cant complain, thats just human nature. On the second, I must say that people, especially athletes with low bodyfat, have different bone structures, bone density, muscle density, even organ sizes. Just looking big doesnt mean youre actually heavier.

So to keep this short does anyone have real evidence to McLellan walking around at something bigger than 180lb? Evidence to McLellan even walking around at his supposed 180lb? Or Im just wrong and a middleweight who walks around at 180lb is, in fact, a big deal?

Don't know what he walked around at but Steward said he was 180 against Jay Bell.

Rick Glaser says that he saw him step on a scale at 198 just before heading to the ring for the second Jackson fight.
It doesn't matter what he "walked around" at. What matters is that he entered the ring at 180 or more while claiming to be a middleweight.
His greatest gift was the ability to cut a ton of weight then rehydrate quickly and maintain the capacity to fight. Just like Michael Moorer at lightheavy when he was cutting to 175 and entering the ring over 200 pounds.

If he actually weighed in at 198lb for a middleweight fight that would be a big deal. I dont understand why walking around at 180lb constitutes a huge middleweight. It matters, to me at least, because people say he was a huge middleweight and the reason for that seems to be "because he walked around at 180lb".

The reason has nothing to do with his walking around weight. The reason he was a big middleweight is because he entered the ring at 180.

Thats between you and me. The reason why Im confused is because others, meaning not you and I, claim he is a big middleweight because he walked around at 180lb. Whether he was lean at 180lb or fat and comfortable at 180lb is up for debate

I call absolute BS on Rick Glaser, and if you believe that I have a bridge to sell you.

McClellan was not no goddamn 200 pounds in the Jackson rematch. He'd be the size of Joe Louis in there! Which he was not.

He didnt gain no damn 40 pounds in 24-hours.

Rick Glaser is talking out his ass.

Can't sight this so please pull me up if it's wrong but I read he was 185-190 on average for his title fights? Sounds like a weight bully but not an awful one.

Couple that with speed and amazing timing, and you get a shed load of one-round blowouts.

That would be 30 pounds. That would be a weight bully.

There's a lot of speculation here, but eye tells me that G-man looked about 172-180 when he came into the ring.

I highly doubt he was 190.
