Continuing on from the "Who's the bigger star; AJ or Canelo?" thread, I'm asking how big a start is Canelo?

Is he the biggest star in the sport today?
How does he compare to the likes of Mayweather and Pacquaio in their best days?

I personally don't think Canelo is THAT big of a star. Certainly not as big as goldenboy make him out to be and nowhere near Mayweather or Pacquaio in their day.

A good win over GGG would help him along the way but the big thing holding him back I feel is his refusal to speak English. This should have been done years ago. How can you be huge in the states or the UK when you won't even speak English?

You can be as big as you want in Mexico. But if you're not huge in the states or the UK you won't get near Mayweather/Pacquaio level. And you won't get huge in either of the boxing super-nations speaking mexican.

For those about to say "Canelo Chavez Jr did 1 million PPV buys"; it was an easy sell to the public with the mexican rivalry, son of a legend, jump in weight etc. Of course that fight was going to do well in the US. Yet despite it being easily Canelos biggest fight as the A side, it still didn't match Mayweather/Pacquaios numbers in their day.

Canelos numbers before this fight aren't exactly great either. I'm not saying he's not a big star. But I don't think he's a superstar and I'm not sure if he'll ever get there.

    What do you guys think?

Probably the biggest star today. Definitely has yet to ascend to Mayweather-Pacquiao levels.

It appears he is huge in America, lots of Mexicans there and alot of Boxing fans. Im from the UK and havnt missed one of his fights in a long long time, he is great to watch. He will never reach Mayweather/Pacquiao level as they were both at thier height something special.

But in the Boxing world he seems to be as big as they come right now and all the nonsense and negativity he may of been getting about whether he was ducking GGG and dropping the belt and the catchweights just washes right over the casual fans and they make up a bigger portion of his popularity than us more interested fans.

Personally i think Spence Jr is guna become the biggest thing in Boxing over the next few years but Canelo, Joshua, Crawford and Lomo will be the serious players in the Boxing world right behind him.

If he was "huge" in the states he'd be doing 1 million+ buys every time he fights. He's been nowhere near that before Chavez Jr.

Conor McGregor, thats what you call "huge" ij the states, Canelo is nowhere near there.

    1. Tyson and Ali, most recognise name and face on the planet. Iconic figures in the world not confined in boxing or sports alone.
    2. Manny Pac, global superstars nearly approaching iconic status. Have 100% back up from his country, the whole Asia and most part of the world.
    3. Oscar Delahoya and Sugar Ray Leonard, superstars in the U.S. in their prime, Olympic gold medalist with flamboyant and charisma with skills to boot.
    4. Floyd Mayweather, boxing superstars, brash, hip hop community backing, supreme skill set, benefitted from Internet, social media and ppv boom.
    5. Holyfield, Lewis. Huge stars benefitted from being a heavyweight and in proximity of Tyson era.
    6. Canelo, Wlad, Joshua.
Canelo is a regional star, popular in North America because of a country backing and U.S. Ppv model. Joshua is a UK star, has big potential to be world wide because of heavyweight. Wlad is huge in Europe and has been a star as he is white, big and had a long reign.
I might have left out some. Feel free to disagree.

I think here in the UK, GGG is probably the more known / bigger name. Probably due to his Brook fight and how sky etc fed us info about GGG to sell the fight.

Hard to say tho, me and all of my friends are quite big boxing fans so we will obviously know about Canelo, hard to gather whether general public do.

Here in the states, the average person won't recognize him. Not much of a cross over star, huge Mexican and Mexican American fan base however, though not Oscar or Chavez levels.

Even DLH, FLoyd and Pac didn't do 1mill plus PPVs without a good dance partner. It bears repeating that Canelo has already, at 26, done(ppvs) way better than FLoyd and Pac had by the time they were that age. Also bear in mind that he never had the benefit of victory over DLH(which is what made FLoyd and Pac PPV "stars"). Also, FLoyd and Pac benefited from a deeper pool of name fighters as opponents. I doubt Canelo will ever reach 4+ mill PPV vs anyone because he simply does not have a "superstar" opponent but relatively speaking he's pretty close to being as big as FLoyd and Pac were in their heyday.

Is canelo even as big as Ricky Hatton? Thousands of Brits flew over to the US to watch him tackled Money. I doubt thousand of Mexicans will leave the taco joint for an overseas match lol..

I have yet to see ANYONE with the power to have an entire country behind him as Ricky Hatton had.
