What Ricky Hatton had with his U.K. fans really can't be compared to any other fighter. U.K. fans in general seem to be far more loyal and dedicated fans. Floyd Mayweather said this about U.K. fans, Paulie Malignaggi has said the U.K. fans are the best in boxing. Ask yourself, would thousands of Floyd's US fans have flown over to the U.K. if Floyd had been fighting Hatton in the U.K.? Would thousands of Pacquiao's fans have flown from the Phillipines if he fought in the U.K.? I guess we can test this theory in a way with the Jeff Horn fight being in Australia, though the Phillipines isn't all that far from Australia, but I doubt we'll hear chants of There's only one Manny Pacquiao or anything like that in the crowd in Australia will we? So I think we can agree that Ricky Hatton had a loyal fanbase that traveled to Vegas for the Floyd fight. Of course they did that because he was fighting Floyd Mayweather the clear P4P #1 Fighter. I doubt they traveled that well for his fight with Collazo in Boston or Juan Urango or the Malignaggi fight or even the Pacquiao fight. Still a dedicated fanbase no doubt, but I doubt any fanbase would travel as well as Hatton's fans traveled to Vegas for the Floyd fight.
Yep, when he invaded America, the whole Manchester city followed him, creating a soccer atmosphere in every fight. Pity he is not in the level of Money and Pac skillwise
I agree with most of your point. But I think you can't use third world country like Philippine for the Pac example, just not feasible economic wise for his Filo fans. But I can assure you, the stadium in Brisbane for the Horn fight will be packed with local Philippinos residing in Australia.
How many fighters have sold 1 million PPVs for a single fight by age 26? How many fighters have sold 5.7 million PPVS by age 26? That should answer your question.
Floyd and Pac at one stage could fight anyone and get over 1 million PPV buys. Clottey and Ortiz spring to mind. You just can't say Canelo is near that level because he isn't, especially globally. He's not that well known in Europe anyway including the UK and Ireland. He's at a great level for a 26 year old no doubt, but that doesn't mean he's at Floyd/Pac level, nor does it guarantee he'll get there. Iff GGG beats him he may never get bigger than he is now. I'm not criticising the fella. I'm just saying if he doesn't become any bigger yet remains boxings "biggest star", then it speaks volumes about where the sport is at in the US. It will be interesting to see what the GGG fight does for him. A win may propell him closer to the May/Pac level. If he gets through that he should definitely fight Billy Joe Saunders to get his name mentioned more in the UK.
That's pretty fair assessment in my opinion. I'd have Mayweather on the De La Hoya, Leonard level though.
If! If Cotto had Canelo's resume, If Cotto was as big as Canelo, If Cotto had Canelo's chin and defense.. If
Pffff Chávez sr. sh+ts all over ricky hatton. The same for macho camacho, trinidad, pacman, durán, monzón, agüello... they all sh+t all over ricky hatton all day long in terms of popularity in their countries. Hatton, that's funny. Canelo is a bigger star than hatton, whether you guys like it or not.
Your post started with a lie. Pac and Floyd could only due 1mill + ppv buys with carefully matched big name opponents(something Floyd was better at) or popular Mexican fighters. Pac. at his peak, could not break the 1mill mark with fighters like Hatton, Clottey and Bradley. Going back to my previous post, they fought under better circumstances than Canelo. Mosley, Cotto, JMM, Hatton, were all "big names" and both Pac and Floyd were able to capitalize on that. Canelo's only "big name" opponents are Chavez Jr, and GGG and by most accounts he already did 1mil + with Jr and will more than likely surpass that vs GGG. Again keep in mind that he's just reaching his prime. So YES, Canelo is at the same level of popular as Pac and Floyd were in their prime(in the Americas). We can split hairs all day but that's a fact. In regards to who is more popular overseas, i'll take your word for it cause I'm not too familiar that.
