How big of a deal was Tyson-Spinks to the mainstream public?

It was to decide who was the genuine world heavyweight champion. Spinks was the linear man who beat the man etc,while Tyson held the three main belts,and had beaten more top fighters than Spinks.

What I remember is it was bigger. ABC had a special about it which coincided with the Spinks/Cooney fight. And this was a primetime ABC show at night. Those two fights you mentioned did not come close to Tyson/Spinks. The fight itself was very anticlimatic. I thought Spinks could possible win, but it turned out Mike was just too strong on the inside.

 

wow I forgot that name until you mentioned it. Steffan Tangstad. I would have never remembered it, but now I do. Someone mentioned Textbook fighters in another post asking if a textbook fighter can always win, and Spinks at heavyweight was very untextbook which allowed him to beat Holmes. Very awkward.
