Gonna try to reach Frankie Gio(seffi), a ubiquitous mafia heavy in movies now, who sparred with Marciano 'n trained with Vingo in the Bronx, to shine some more light on this.
Sorry Seamus didn't to touch a raw nerve there - was just attempting to illustrate - to give someone a kind of handle on it - sometimes it can be a bit unclear - you can't really get a feel for someones general size and dimensions sometimes until you see someone you do have an idea on like say a Tyson for a modern fan or whatever - I was in no way comparing them as fighters - I was simply trying to give him an idea on how things might have looked ie how they might have looked at least size wise in there - like for instance Archie Moore was light heavyweight champ but physically the guy was pretty big in his upper body - I have a pic of him aged about 80 visiting with Tyson in training and he makes Tyson look pretty small so clearly people who don't really know any better might have the mistaken preconception that as a light heavyweight Archie must've been pretty smallish - just trying to give him a bit more to go on that's all - sorry for causing any offense:huh
Moore made Tyson look small??? Because of his upper body??? Moore never saw the day in his life when he was bigger than Tyson. Tyson was taller, weighed more at his lowest weight than Moore ever weighed at his highest weight when he was fat as a pig, had a broader chest relaxed than Moore had expanded, had a bigger neck, in fact the only measurement that Moore surpases Tyson in was reach.
I'll be really really interested to hear anything you can get on these two John - cannot wait - any chance you could PM me with anything you find out aswell just incase i miss the thread when you post whatever you come back with?? Vingo is one am especially interested to learn as much as I can about
Tyson definately wasn't taller Klompton - Tyson was quite a bit shorter than Moore - to be honest Klompton you're proving my point about how easy it is to get the wrong impression from just reading stats - a work friend of mine who is exactly 6foot met Tyson when on holiday in vegas and he said Tyson was quite a bit shorter than him - he said he was really shocked - I've always thought Tyson looked shorter than 5'11 and a half" in the pic with my mate I'd say Tyson is about 5'8"/5'9" he was a good 2 or 3 inches shorter than my mate and they were both in flip flops at the time - trust me the pic I have of Tyson with Moore - Archie is also a good couple of inches taller than Tyson and also as broad easily (actually I'd say he's a bit broader looking all told - also Moore surpassed Tyson in his bicep measurement by half an inch also but again I was only making an observation as how guys LOOK to give someone who might not really have a good handle on it to give them a perspective on something like the reality of how they might look size wise side by side in reality as opposed to just hearing someone like you whining about him being nowhere as big as Tyson without actually knowing
According to Newspapers, Vingo was 6'4 and typically weighed around 190lb. I have seen photos and he appeared to carry the weight well(he wasn't a bean pole by any means). It's too bad Vingo's career ended so early. It would have been interesting to see if he would have made it or not. He was so young at only 20 years old. In my new york times article I have pre-fight, Charley Goldman was plenty worried about vingo. Said "This kid is plenty big and can hit like a mule".
I stand 5' 9 and a half or 5' 10" I got the opportunity to see Tyson once at the airport and he was at least my height. If you want to make a point about looks thats fine but lets also not forget that photographs can be equally deceptive. Case in point, a few weeks I was lucky enough to spend some time with Cory Spinks. He is almost exactly my size, shape, and build. Yet the photos we took together he looks like a lightweight compared to me. At the same time I got to meet Evander Holyfield. Holyfield weighs a good fifty or more pounds than I do and stands about five inches taller give or take. In the photos he doesnt look that much bigger than me despite such a significant difference in our sizes. Leon Spinks was there as well and despite being shorter and naturally smaller in his prime than Holyfield he looked significantly bigger and taller. So yes I understand your point and actually think we basically agree, my point was that despite what Moore looked like in a photo he was never bigger than Tyson in old age or in his prime... except maybe around the mid section... Moore liked to eat.
Ever see that celebrity heights website? ...thousands of comments of people bickering about deceptive photos and who is leaning and slouching and their shoes...it's great. "No, I have a picture where Stallone is next to Schwarzenegger and he's way over 5'2, you dink!" "But look at him next to Billy Blanks, who is no bigger than 5'11 and Stallone is clearly between 5'6 and 5'8." "Are you insane? ...He's slouching. Stallone has horrible posture!" "I've been watching Stallone for thirty years and met him in person twice and he never slouches! He's just not very tall." "I'm Sly's cousin and trust me when I say he's dead on 6'3, he looks shorter next to Joe Montana because Montana's wearing a striped shirt and he's leaning back with the light hitting him." "Don't listen to that guy, he goes to everybody's page and says he's their cousin. Stallone wears lifts that make him look 5'10-5'10.5. He's really about 5'7. End of." ...etc.
My work mate said he thought Tyson was about 5'8"/5'9" - he said he was "a fair bit shorter than me" and my mate is 6ft exactly - I said to him "well the tale of the tape says he's only half an inch shorter than you??" and he said "yeah right??! He was not much taller than you (meaning me and I'm 5'7") - I'd guess he was 5'8" maybe 5'9 max" He said he has a huge head tho (not ego) - and huge hands!! It's like Holyfield aswell - when he was crusierweight champ his height was always listed as 6'1" but as soon as he came up to start out as a heavyweight then they suddenly mysteriously increased his height to 6'2" in his tale of the tape - i remember at the time a journalist in Boxing Monthly made a sarcastic remark about his trainers maybe putting him in a grow-bag for a month
some guys you meet and you say "heavyweight". I have met both tyson and holyfeild. Both were wearing well fitted suits. Holyfeild looked like a slim fit guy with evrything in proportion, he realy did not stand out as a big guy. just a regular 6 footer but not especialy a heavyweight. Tyson was very heavy at the time I met him, retired and must have been 240 plus, chubby cheeks and quite bloated. He sat in a room full of fans and though there were taller people there Tyson was the biggest and widest guy there. His head was a box. he wore a suit jacket that was cut wide at the shoulders but he just looked like a giant with short legs. He was under 6 foot but he is over 5'9'' in shoes. compleatly out of proportion. Tony tucker sat next to him and tony had a smaller head. Tucker looked no taller than 6'4 in shoes.
The funny thing is: Emille Griffith, at the height of his career as a welter, because of his huge shoulders, looked like a heavyweight in a suit.
