Does anybody else no longer watch boxing but still follow it? I’ve struggled to come up with a thread title to convey my feelings for boxing but am not sure if this captures it (and I don’t want come across like a whiner). after 10 years of being a fairly hardcore fan I finally got sick of the bullish!t and felt like I could no longer financially support the sport, even though I loved it and still follow it faithfully. I’d like to start another thread about how magic boxing can be to offset this more negative thread but for now here is a list of reasons that killed it for me... 1) Golden Boy Promotions- when Oscar announced his plans to start his own promotional company it sounded great. After having sued and won against, “the biggest Jew to come out of Harvard” Oscar stated that he was going to do things different. It made sense; if any start up company could compete against the ultra villains of arum and king it’d be the golden boy. A good looking, media savvy, wealthy, bilingual, HOFer like Oscar seemed to be the man. So what was his first order of business? To poach Manny Pacquiao away from arum with a duffle bag full of cash a la Don King and hasim rahman. So much for doing things different. This launched the Cold War and boxing fans were worse off. Richard Schaefer: Oscar brings this guy in and suddenly he’s everywhere. We're constantly told that he’s a Swiss banker and he becomes more prevalent than the fighters themselves! Ring Magazine: I used to look forward to buying the Ring. I liked Nigel Collins, will detloff and Eric Raskin. Oscar fired the whole staff with no announcement and that was that. Fishnets...no need to comment any further... 2) Bob Arum - “ F*** the fans!” Unaware that his mic was on, bob spoke truthfully about how he really felt. Not that boxing fans didn’t have our suspicions but he confirmed them in what might be the only time he said anything truthful in public. 3) Increasing pay per views: both increasing prices and more frequently 4) The proliferation of belts, the alphabet groups in general and the best avoiding the best 5) Manny Pacquiao and catchweights. Forcing Cotto and margarito to melt down but still making them put their belts on the line. 6) The rise of Money: Floyd was arrogant as hell when he started but at 130 the dude was a flat out assassin. He backed up his arrogance in the ring. But after Money, the guy was insufferable and hbo helped enable him. His ducking of prime margarito and Manny, all the while insisting he was better than Leonard and Robinson, only to fight Guerrero, Ortiz, etc just became too much. Fair play to him though, he made hundreds of millions. 7) Bad scoring, either due to incompetence or corruption... Anyhoo, I could go on but that’s about it. At my high point of being a fan I was probably spending about $1500 a year on cable tv, ppv, magazines and even some boxing lessons. But the bull poop became just too much. Anybody else out there know where I’m coming from?
Manny Pacquiao did not force Margarito to put his belt on the line it was for a vacant belt. Then against Cotto it was at a 145 pounds, you make it seem like Pac drained Cotto to like 141 or 142. If anything the 145 is not big deal. Cotto is a better 145 pounder than a 147 pounder. Let's remember that his best weight class was 140 pounds. The other reasons I'm on board with though.
Boxing is still a good sport but it is no different than modern life In the old days here in the middle of Devon my only access was Boxing news mag and BBC sports night on Wednesday night some 10 min coveage on world of sport on a Saturday afternoon and Saturday or Friday live fight night . Then came videos DVD then Sky We got more info learnt more then the internet ! Now as a fan its just boxing overload ! With you tube internet and you lot I could study it all day ! So it is no longer as special as it was I love rugby too and thats the same
Yup... I used to TIVO anything with boxing in the info. I'd watch all the TNT/USA/ESPN/Premium's reruns/Classics etc. Hell, even reruns of journeyman fights. Now....I don't even look for it. I come here, the competition, box rec and look for prospects in the lower top 100, see if they could go.... I order/go out for PPVs worth watching. I watch a lot of legal feeds from EU/UK/RU/EE/OZ I rarely chase the lesser fights on the tube. Wait till YouTube has it. Or read the rbr
I'm just sick of corruption in plain view. I literally went offline, didn't even check my favs schedules from GGG being robbed til bout 2 wks ago.
That dud of a Pac Mayweather fight damn near killed boxing. That paired with the culture of selective matchmaking and corrupt judging have taken most of the luster off for me.
I had already stopped watching boxing by then but I did watch that fight because my buddy had ordered it and was throwing a party. Watching that was like having sex with an ugly broad, not even coming and getting herpes to top it off
Heard Oscar bought some new fishnets....................he plans to buy a new dress, new shade of lipstick, but he will be busy buying judges, referees, boxing commissions, etc., so he won't have much time in the future...............he has to fix the Golovkin/El Pollo fight ASAP! Get those corrupt judges in line................
Boxing is bigger than us & our personal moods, knowing our dismal size helps us understand boxing When the mind is no longer perfect...It tricks you into thinking that Boxing lost its magic... Lots of great people that will continue to feed into boxing, quality will make up for quantity & vice versa, the boxing value will always remain 1:1, as long as your remain inside the boxing world. If you are still in boxing, having Vasyl Lomachenko, Deontay Wilder & the Young Hungry Cruisers alone keeps boxing very exciting...
