How can a fighter be 'broken' or 'shot' after one defeat/KO?

I'm just speculating here, but there seems to be some fighters (such as Hamed) with a brittle confidence based on success, a certainty in their invincibility which can lead to them taking the kind of risks which may lead to them winning fights and thus feeding off itself. When this bubble is finally burst though, the realisation that they are fallible, and always were, can lead to a devastating loss of confidence in the ring. I suspect this kind of mindset is probably exacerbated by the propensity of successful, ego driven, fighters to attract sycophantic entourages, and hangers on who will tend to stoke the fighters' ego still further. The tendency of fans and the media to talk about fighters as being unbeatable probably doesn't help either.

I guess I'm talking about believing your own hype.

Of course the mentally tougher fighters, specially those who have perhaps suffered losses earlier in their career, but continued to fight anyway, are less likely to suffer so dramatically from the loss of a single fight.

    Happens all the time

Bute hasn't been the same since Froch
Vargas wasn't the same after Tito
Reid wasn't the same after Tito
Jones was never the same after Tarver2

Every fighter is different. And every situation is different as to why the fighter isn't the same. Some are mental, some are simply physiological.

For example.... if Bradley comes back and looks like crap, gets wobbled by punches he normally wouldn't be, and his career takes a downturn, it has less to do with his mentality then it does the fact he took constant brain trauma for 30+ minutes and that has an effect on the brain and ones ability to hold a shot.

Guys like Bute, I think has to do with his mentality and confidence. He can bounce back. Guys like Vargas, it had to do with his physical ability to withstand blows to the head being diminished.

I don't understand why people think you can have your brain bashed around like some of these guys do and not expect there to be lingering effects from that.
