I was reading about Manny Stewards coaching camps recently. He mentioned that a smaller fighter can outbox his taller opponent by jabbing at certain angles

Does anybody know anything about this?

you can outbox a taller opponent while catching him when he turn direction. If you use your footwork and don't let the taller guy set, while the taller guys adjusts his position you jump on him.

easier said then done, but that is the theory behind it.

or you can counter around the outside by punching to make him punch back then counter his counter.

    again easier said then done

    Thanks for the reply.

Any idea what Steward was saying about jabbing at different angles. You can read what he said in one of the reports about his camps. It's on the main page.

If you stand in front of someone his reach will prevent you from hitting him, you need to look for angles. Manny Steward means exactly what he said, in order to outbox a taller opponent you need to box smarter. Finding different angles to jab from makes perfect sense.

exactly what i said means using angles. Get the angle with your footwork, then jump on him when opponent is re adjust. Using angles basically means don't jab from in front of him.

he isn't talking about the actual jab, he is talking about positioning.

A good way to do it is by sidestepping round the taller guy. This opens up some spots and gives the small guy the chance to throw a few jabs and land them.

The Jabs all about timing, to a certain extent.

Miguel Cotto out jabbed Shane Mosley.

Mike Tyson nearly snapped Tryell Biggs neck with a jab.

I'm gonna try and find the clip of that.

You need to get under the jab. Your jab should be upward-inflected against a taller opponent, while at the same time keeping your head out of harm's way. All's that's needed is a simple feint followed by a slip of the head to the right while throwing it in order to offset their counter-jab. While slipping you're going to want to lower your base in order to create a sharper angle while giving yourself a wider opening.

How to out-jab a taller opponent, anyway. Watch Dwight Qawi work his jab against consistently taller fighters to get a good example. In order to have constant success against them, you need to present lateral movement, head movement, and angles when looking to attack. These things make it difficult for the opponent to get into a flow of their own, often causing them to overthink and leaving them vulnerable for your next move. You just need to have poise. Watch someone like Alberto Davila.

  11. Shorter people tend to have faster rhythm and head movement, you'll need to be crafty getting in the side finding angles. Getting into a crouch will help safely draw out an attack for you to counter. It's the counter punching thats big for shorter opponants, he'll want to hold you down at a distance. Timing and pressure. Draw out his attack and slip past it push him back.

I liked how floyd took on that tall opponant in the olympics, the one where he was robbed. There was significant height differance from memory.

look at fights such as cotto vs margo (although marg won in the end) and pacquiao vs hoya

both cotto and pac were darting in and out and moving laterally.

I love boxing I hate the term box. If a shorter man has good footwork, and a good defense and uses that to avoid his opponents punches get in close where the taller man is weak he is out boxing him.

Well said, the idea that outboxing is always done in the distance is flawed. James Toney outboxed a lot of his opponents in a phone booth.

It means you can't just walk straight up to a taller guy and expect to out-jab him, because his jab will land first.

You can overcome this by drawing him in, slipping his jab while simultaneously throwing your own either upstairs or downstairs. When you initiate the jabbing, you should usually throw multiple jabs.

When you're shorter, throwing a jab out of a slip to the right can be effective. You can also jab while stepping left to get between those hands.
