I like Amir Khan as a boxer and as a person, but the reason there are still a lot of doubters out there goes to the heart of one of boxing's biggest problems: The protection of over-promoted fighters at the expense of their equally worthy rivals.

Khan is a world champion. To me a belt-holder shouldn't be hand-picking powder-puff punching opponents and ducking his mandatory, while Maidana is fed to Victor Cayo in the hope he loses and is no longer deemed a worthy challenger to Khan's belt. Both these fighters are around Khan's age, and yet neither are given his opportunities and protection, with it strongly rumoured that both had to sign an agreement in the contract with HBO that the winner wouldn’t enforce a title fight with Amir Khan for at least a year. This kind of inequality is unfair on the boxers, who suffer so Khan can undeservedly prosper. I don't mean this as a slur on Khan, but he didn't deserve the title shot against Kotelnik two fights after being KTFO in under a minute, and as long as his team pick and choose his opponents I'll never be truly impressed.

That enequality has always existed in boxing, so it's kinda unfair to just single out Khan for it. He was/is young, talented, popular, and very marketable; therefore it's inevitable that he'll have more doors opened for him. Boxing is a business, and those people handling him are going to treat their cash cow carefully, not recklessly.

But I do agree that his career has been accelerated a considerable amount, to the point where he's been pushed on to a stage which he isn't even fully ready for. I've always maintained that a fighter shouldn't even be holding a world title, until he's fully equipped and prepared to take on any and all of his challengers.

But with that said, for us fans this has probably been a good thing. Now imagine if Khan had beaten Prescott that night, you can bet all your money that he'd still be with Frank Warren fighting bums around the UK. But thankfully, that loss forced Khan to make drastic changes and carry out a few brave moves to win the people over again. It's now put him in a position where he is being demanded to fight the big boys of his division, despite him not even being ready for them! He could have so easily fallen in to the same trap as Calzaghe, chose the easy way and stay with Warren for the majority of his career, earning easy money against easy opposition in the comfort of his back yard.

But nope, he's moved to the states and joined a promotional firm who unlike Frank Warren, are renowned for throwing their fighters in the deep end straight away. It's almost certain that Khan will be facing Maidana (who by the way will have no problem against Cayo and continuing his win streak) some point down the road, and Bradley after it. Make no mistake, compared to other UK fighters, Khan has put himself in a situation where he will not have a protected career.
