How can anyone argue about Marciano not being elite?

    Hi Buddy.
Funny how we fight fans view and see fighters in an alternative light, I wouldn't have thought that Basilio was imbued with skill, or be described as " immensely skilled " quite the opposite in fact, from the fights I have seen, he strikes me as more of a walk forward pressure fighter, willing to take the other guys shots so he can get up close and employ his great body punching, even in winning fights he appeared marked up, and cut, look I am a huge admirer of Basilio, as stated many times in my posts, but to see him as skilled is not what I see, it could be I am missing something, and I would be more than willing for you point out the error of my thinking, and I mean that in a serious and genuine way, no one is to old to learn.

He fought everyone that was there and went undefeated. The division at that time was far different than now. Heavyweights got a lot bigger after him and he shouldn't be compared with them.
He was a 184 pounder who went 49-0 for his era. That's all you can ask. If you compare him to anyone within his own size range, suddenly he will look a lot better to most critics. Why people keep comparing him to Foreman, Holmes ....Tyson Fury, etc... is ridiculous....
Rocky was a small cruiserweight. Yet he gets the most criticism and bashing of any fighter but I think I now the real reason why. I see this stupid nonsense on other websites too.
I see fighters on here like Cleveland Williams (big whoop, so what), and Ron Lyle (another big whoop so what), being given more credit and they weren't even champions.

Lennox Lewis gets more excuses though than any other fighter. He was KO'ed twice by B level fighters and could barely make it past an over-the-hill Holyfield that he outweighed by 30 lbs. Barely made it past Ray Mercer, (did he really even win that one?), a 40 year old comebacking Holmes handled Mercer with ease...

Yes, elite for a cruiser sized guy. Hell of a champion and an atg. Not sure if those skills would still be elite against modern sized guys, that's my only issue. Nearly any atg has a set of skills that could translate to other eras, Rocky not so much. In terms of just his career in a vacuum, yes he was elite. If we're comparing him to his peers, I rate fighters higher based more on intangibles.

But that's in a fantasy h2h sense. They don't think he'd have much success today because he would be so much smaller.

You were talking about how he did in his own time, so surely you meant resume? In terms of resume I've never seen him ranked outside of the top 10, I think.
