How can anyone say Roy's ATG status hasn't dropped substantially?

People are saying that Roy Jones' losses shouldn't affect his ATG status, but I beg to differ. Not because he lost, but because of the way he lost. Knocked out three times...I mean come on. Tyson and Ali's legacy isn't affected because they didn't lose like Jones did, and they accomplished more than Roy did. Ali, light years past his prime, and in the beginning stages of Parkinson, still managed to stay on his feet against Spinks, Berbick, and Holmes. It was Tyson's heart - or lack thereof - that caused him to lose against the likes of Danny Williams and Kevin McBride, and he wasn't taken out by a single punch like Jones was 3 times! Almost 4...he got damn lucky in that 11th round of the third Tarver fight.

Take a look at the the average top 50 ATG p4p list...you'd be hard pressed to find someone who lost multiple times in the fashion Jones lost. I mean, knocked out by one punch 3 times? I challenge anyone to find a top 50 ATG who this happened to.

There is no denying that Roy was the man back in the day, and accomplished some great things, but those losses...those 3 knockout losses are more than enough to tarnish his ATG rating. Just imagine...had Jones retired after beating John Ruiz, he would have retired with a record of 47-1 (38 KO), and would easily be a top 30 ATG, and "Ya'll musta forgot" would have a lot more credibility. But, he didn't, and now...he is not, and that song has to be one of the most ironic songs ever written.

Roy was only knocked out cold once...He got up right at the 10 count for Tarver and he got up in the Green fight....

The Tarver and Johnson losses should be taken into consideration, but the Danny Green fight doesn't tarnish anything AT ALL.

Lennox Lewis got his ass knocked out twice.

Thomas Hearns lost in the second round to Uriah Grant by Tko.....Uriah Grant....

Mike Tyson has some very bad losses and very bad knockouts.

Roy is a future HOFer and will be in many top 50 lists. His losses are not amplified to his record because he was and has been well past his prime.
In his prime, he beats all 3 of his losses. Toney and B-Hop know a thing or two of a prime RJJ!

It affects his image because people remember him being knocked out, but it shouldn't affect his status as an ATG. He still beat HOF fighters Hopkins,Toney and Hill. Those 3 guys were in like 60 world title fights combined. And he had a good lightheavyweight reign.

Hearns sprained his ankle in that fight and was inactive, but I see the point. Hearns was 41 years old just like Jones.

Everyone is well aware, except for maybe the man himself, that he should have retired 6 or 7 years ago. Luckily, boxing is the type of sport that people remember your distinguished accomplishments during your prime and overlook the unfortunate realities that occur after.

MrTony has been on an anti-Jones tirade since the Green KO. We get it, guy.

The difference between Lewis and Jones is that Lewis avenged those losses. Lewis beat every man he ever faced, and that is more than enough to cement HIS ATG status.

It's just that I am so disappointed in how his career panned out, and getting KO'd in the 1st round was the clincher. It made me step back and analyze Roy's career, and I came the conclusion that despite how great he once was, those 3 knockouts put a bad stain on whatever else he did in the ring.

Jones was too past it to avenge his losses.

Lewis still got his ass knocked out, it doesn't matter if he avenged him he still got his ass beat, I thought that's what this thread was about.

Not trying to discredit Lennox he was one of my favorites and from my Hometown in Canada (talked to him a couple times also)

Not really, I always thought he was overrated.

However it does make one wonder how he goes against a pure puncher in his prime. Let's face it he hasn't fought a real KO arteeest in his prime!! If u don't kno Green. The man can put anybody on ***** st with one punch.

pfft tyson and ali had great chins, roy didn't, and you cant improve a weak chin with sparring or training. so im not gonna riddacule a guy because he couldn't take a decent punch, I dont see it as his fault, infact its even more of a testiment to good he was that it didn't get found out until very late in his career.

he still did great things in his career, Roy having a weak chin doesn't tarnish any of that.

overrated. I am not sure. He did handpick guys, but he did beat Bernard Hopkins, James Toney and Virgil Hill. And those guys were tops in their divisions.
