How can boxing "experts" not notice the obvious talents of Sergio Martinez until now?

Looks like he was chucked in the scrap heap undeservedly when he was knocked out by Margarito years ago.

 

Because he has fought one good fighter and lost badly...The rest of his resume is full of fringe guys and pure clubfighters...Its not that hard to look good vs those kinds of fighters, so in short no one was buying. I think that he has some good skills, I think that once he steps up it wont be so great for him, but he should at least get the chance.

 

He had not been in with anyone of note before Bunema, Margarito was pretty much a nobody when he knocked Martinez out 8 years ago.

 

He is like a poor man's version of Daniel Santos.

and i'm not saying he's a bad fighter, just i don't think he's on that level.

 

He was under the radar for while, mainly because he had been fighting abroad. But after signing with Dibella, he picked up some steam last year when knocked out Saul Roman on Telefutura with a perfect straight left to the body. Not too long after that, he fought Russell Jordan on Versus, and began to start turning heads. He is 33 years old, but still a young 33, and has more than enough time to do damage at junior weltweight.

 

Other than their hand and their weight, I fail to see how Martinez is ANYTHING like Santos.

 

Maybe cuz he lost to Margarito,maybe cuz of low exposure,who knows?Maybe he never looked this good?

 

You'll find out why he was written off early when he gets in with someone who can punch. But for now, check his resume.

 

His resume sucks. Secondly, he isn;t that good. Period. He just isn't.

 

As some of the Brits will attest to some people stood up and took notice when he beat guys like Richard Williams and Adrian Stone. Thats when I first saw him and I thought to myself to keep an eye on him.

But then his career went nowhere for a few years and he went off the radar until he stopped Roman, which was fairly impressive aswell.

Im far from on the bandwagon though, he is ok but for christ sakes it was Alex Bunema he was in there with.
Theoretically he should fight Forrest next, which I will watch with interest. He is decent chance of getting the upset against a fading Vernon but until then he is just one of many very decent but not overly special fighters around at the moment.

 

If Vernon comes in shape, Martinez will not have a prayer...jmo lol.

 

comon now Vernon is shot and has not really looked impressive since that shaky decision against Quartey

 

His style and swagger may put him in with the big dogs getting big money but at the same time, many people will want to see him get KTFO because of the way he carries himself around the ring.
