Steward had to work on Tommy`s punch technique because he wasn`t a hard puncher as an amateur and was beart by Aaron Pryor back then.
True he did and technique does have a part to play but the type of power Hearn's had.... you can't put that down to technique, you are born with power like that. Let's remember he turned pro as a teenager, so his whole career as an amateur was a teenager. As you move on and gain your "man strength" etc the power comes through..... and that right hand he had was pure dynamite
Just believe in yourself, man. You'll hear people talking about dimensions and physical traits. But it's not about the shape and size of a fighter, it's about the mind. Ever heard the saying mind over matter? It's just like that. Boxing is 99% mental like all sport. You have to have self belief. If you believe you can fight like Hearns, you will get there. Obstacles will come, you'll have naysayers, you'll have setbacks. Don't let that stop you. Mountains aren't built in a day and champions aren't forged in the shadow of a tree. Will you ever fight like Hearns exactly? No, you'll fight like YOU. But will Hearns ever fight like you exactly? No, he fought like HIM. But that doesn't mean you can't match his mind and from there match his style. Styles make fights. Remember that.
Probably the best summation of Tommy's style I've read on here - on the money. Tommy's left hook is sadly overlooked by most people but it was a thing of beauty. The Shuler fight you mentioned but he used it to gret effect in the first Barkley fight too, untl he got caught by that looping right hand. Virgil Hill said Tommy hit him harder with the left hook than the right hand.
Get into a time machine and start boxing at 8 years old like he did. Starve yourself so that you are physically nearly a foot taller and longer than all of your opponents. Then get one of the best trainers ever to manage your career.
Hearns did far better v Hagler than ODH would have, he wasn`t a foot taller than ODH and would have beaten him.
