They do some things right, and some things I think really need reworking. Which is fair enough, building a brand is actually a lot easier said than done. Sounds easy until you actually have to go and do it, so I try not to be too critical of many of their mistakes. At least not in a terminally negative way. The one thing they do that really irks me, is treating most other promoters and networks like the enemy instead of colleagues. I think its short sighted, and I really doubt it works in the long run. Its like they think they can get the world to forget about the rest of boxing, but in a digital world that's not really possible. It might have worked 15 years ago, or 20 years ago. If they used their bully-pulpit to make better fights, including across promotions, I think it would be better for boxing and better for PBC.
The best way to fix boxing is if everyone is on the same page and working together ..We don't need promoters and TV execs throwing around their ego's because the sport and the fans suffer ..So far what they are doing is good for the sport but like you said the negatives really hurt it ,hopefully we do get everyone working together so we can get the fights we want and we won't have to pay for them
Totally agree. If they used pbc to actually showcase the best of boxing by bringing promoters like gbp and top rank together, i wouldnt have a problem with it. Instead they are using it as a power move to push out GBP and Top Rank... which means another cold war, which means less top tier fights being made.
As much as I dislike Haymon, I'm finally getting Huck Vs Diablo on US Free TV, and I must say that's pretty ****ing cool. But I still think it won't last.
Good point. When the UFC became a big monopoly it crushed and bought out all of it's competitors until it was the only game in town. Dana White even keeps a faux tombstone in his office with his bankrupted rivals logos on it. International Fight Leauge, Elite XC, Affliction, Pride, WEC, Strikeforce, etc. Haymon did destroy Friday Night Fights, gutted Golden Boy, and killed Iron Mike's new promotion company in it's cradle. And people could make the point that Haymon is keeping PBC fighters from facing their biggest opponents on HBO or Showtime.
Huck vs Wlod, I'd watch the **** out of that. Year or two late though. Seriously, when was the last unification fight at Cruiserweight? Huck's had his belt five years and Wlod held his for four. They practically live across the street from each other. What were they waiting for, an engraved invitation?
Yeah, I never liked Haymon but honestly I've been converted. He's been doing awesome things, this is the best year of boxing that I've personally seen.
