I don't get how people can say Tyson is overrated when he was 5'10, which is shorter than a lot of super middle weights, and had a reach of just 71 inches, which is shorter than shane Mosley's reach.

Lennox reach is 84 inches just to give a comparison to what this guy had to deal with on a nightly basis.

I just thinks it's crazy calling a world champion heavy weight with a middle weights height, and a welterweights reach overrated.

Thats like calling 5'7 Spud Webb an overrated dunker for losing to Jordan in the dunk contest.

It's easy to tell who has never sparred in this forum, go to gym and spar a guy with a 4 inch advantage and see how hard it is to get away from his jab, and also try to get inside to land a power punch and see what happens.

    That is all :happy:happy:happy

Yesterday I comment on the 'Is Tyson overrated' thread and said he was for various reasons, however you do make a good point here, something that tends to go overlooked. Taking into consideration his size, he did accomplish a lot. I'll give you that, I'll move up Tyson's status in my Official Unbiased Universal Antonio's Mental Ranking System...

And sparring with my older bro is difficult, he's 5 inches taller and has a 4 inch reach advantage, he's never been easy on me...

No one is saying what he did isn't impressive, but all in all he had flaws, most notably like you pointed: His size. He is an ATG but he is not indestructible as some says.

tyson may be underrated by real boxing fans, the problem is the casual fan think of him and Ali as the greatest ever

  7. He is overrated because of how people make him out to be. When he lost people made excuses to show how nobody could beat him.

Douglas a nobody knocked him out so let us build him up and justify the fact Tyson lost.

Tyson is a top 10 heavyweight but not unbeatable

Tyson isn't overrated due to his size.

It's because people are overwhelmed by his prime years and how good he looked. Yet when you look at the level of competition he faced during those years any ATG would beat those guys in their prime years.

This is HW boxing son, you don't get bonus points for being short.

I'd also add it's because of his size that he was so damn successful!!

Tyson's unique in the way that guys of his build are almost always slower, Tyson was built like a brick house and had devastating power with punches coming from all types of angles with real speed and accuracy. On top of it all he was technically adept and moved his head, thus you never saw him marked up after his wins in the 80s.

You may say Tyson's level of opposition lacked, but who could he have fought? He fought everyone available and smashed them to bits.

Exactly. He blew everyone out of the water in the most dominating of ways. 9 defenses in his first reign was the 4th best at the time, and he could have done so much more. The 80's era looks less than stellar BECAUSE Tyson obliterated everyone. A very underrated decade. IF I recall, the 90's started to look the same when Holy lost to Moorer, who lost to Foreman, who should have lost to Schulz, who lost to Botha, who lost to Moorer, who lost to Holyfield...the same passing the belt around circumstances that the 80's gets blamed for.

Not everyone was blown out of the water, see this is a perfect example.

What about Smith, Tucker, Ribalta, Green and Tilis?

And what about the guys he did demolish? Ok he done it quicker than most but those guys would be beaten by other ATGs.

I have no problem with people rating him around 10th, that's where I have him. It's when you read he was an invincible monster, he'd blow Vitali out in 3, he's a top 3 HW etc that it gets ridiculous.

They don't count, Tyson blew out everyone don't you know. He never had trouble with guys who were much taller than him and could outmuscle him in the clinch.

Tyson lost years of his prime wasting away in prison ( for stealing milk from his own refrigerator ) and was never the same when he came back, just imagine how different it could have turned out if he didn't go to prison. He was short, his reach sucked, and he was fighting one dude in particular who's head butt attack would make Tim Bradley shudder. Go watch early videos of tyson when he had his head on somewhat straight and was coming up. If that's "overrated" ur crazy. There will NEVER BE A BEAST like Iron Mike Tyson, period, end of story, that's all folks.

    LOL!

I agree with the submitter though. When you think of it from size wise, Tyson was very bad ass!
