His haters are just mad that he is the second most recognizable boxer of all time, and most people could not pick their personal favourites out of a line. Bring up Frazier, Holmes, Holyfield, or Lewis and non-boxing fans don't have a clue. But everybody knows Ali and Tyson.
Tyson was a KO artist. He did it better than Ali, Holmes, Foreman, Vlad, Vitali, or any other HW champion in recent history. He did it quicker, more devastating, early, and with surgically precise compassion. Mike Tyson, ATG HW!!!
I miss your point. Physical attributes are part of the game, so if Tyson or Webb lack some, it's not a problem of the observer. However, Tyson is clearly overrated by casual fan, mildly overrated by boxe enthusiasts.
You cannot make allowances for Tyson simply because he was short. It would be like saying that Usain Bolt would only be a 10.3 second runner if he was average height! It's a person's physical characteristics that to a large extent, determine their level of performance. Tyson was lucky to be around at a time when the standard of HW boxing was so freakishly low. Tyson would never have stood a chance against any decent tall boxer. Lewis & Klitchkos would have alwys outclassed him, and his only chance of winning would have been to land a lucky Hayemaker (and Vitali's chin being so good there would not have even been that possibility either)
He's overrated H2H against over other ATG super heavies. But p4p, should be held in higher regard. Since he had a lot of physical disadvantages...
Tyson deserves acclaim. He actually came to fight, no ****ing around, just controlled destruction. He was exciting and destructive, great style, great fighter. It looked good and thats why it captured the imagination so much, there is the substance behind the hype. Povetkinfan i dissagree. Wlad would very little chance of surviving the opening rounds. Lewis would be interesting but i would favor Mike by a decent margin and Vitali is a toss up.
Lewis fought better comp throughout his career and is disrespected on these boards way more than Tyson.
Golota, Ruddock, Holyfield x2, Botha, Lewis did it better. I've already said prime Tyson was a beast and H2H he's a nightmare for anyone. A lot of people have sand in their vaginas about this, it's like I'm pissing on their god.
He is overrated because he only beat cab drivers, bums and a few journeyman. He is top 30 ATG but no more than that.
He always fought in his natural (and only one possible) weight division. So his P4P ranking cannot be higher than his heavyweight ranking.
one has little to do with the other. your argument for why he is not overrated is that he is short and has little reach.
A prime Tyson is a nightmare for any heavyweight who ever lived, and it all comes down to speed.Along with Ali and Patterson Tyson had the fastest handspeed of any heavy ever, only he had great power to go with it. Anyone who calls him overrated basically knows nothing about boxing and is a baffoon. His speed, power, attitude and conditioning in his prime would have gave him a chance to beat anyone and I mean anyone. Wlad would have run a mile and have **** himself when confronted by Iron Mike who would have rushed him,got inside the jab and knocked him out. Lewis and Foreman stylistically would always have been a problem but I still think a prime Tyson would have prevailed.
the biggest misconception people have on this board and its because they are ignoran and werent there and go by what they hear. Mike Tyson was the phenom he was and rightfully so because in 3 years he unified the heavyweight divison and had 11 world title fights...and all were giant events that meant something. 11 world title fights 11 opponents 9 of which were a current, future or former legitmate heavyweight champions the 2 that werent This content is protected This content is protected 10 wins 1 losss all by the age of 23 years old winning the heavyweight title against won WBC title at age 20 against trevor berbick who was coming off a win vs undefeated pinklon thomas Won WBA bonecrusher smith coming off a first round ko of 2 time heavweght champ witherspoon Tony Tucker 34-0 TNT Tucker was supposed to fight michael spinks for the IBF title who just won by beating 48-0 and 48-1 larry holmes... spinks pulled out, went for money and fought cooney left the IBF Vacant for Tucker vs Douglas so just because you dont know who the **** his opponents are dont mean they werent legit....and not only by beating them, he was crushing them,,,he gave berbick, tubbs, thomas, all their first KO losses and they were just fresh off 12 round and 15 round close losses...and mike blew them out of the water guess michael spinks sucked to 35-0 , ring champ, "linear" as half the boxing world still listed spinks champion...and its was down the middle on who was picking who to win....91 seconds later..... cause he made it look easy, doesnt mean anything but for those 3-5 years, before he went crazy, making 100 million already...he was better than anyone if you want to compare what he did in his era to them
