This is true, and there is nothing wrong about it (except the bitching of course), a local hero always makes a sport more exciting. A lot of people start to watch a sport that they have never followed before, just because the dominating champ comes from the own country. The Ukrainians would not love HW boxing without the Klitschkos, I am quite sure. The Germans would not care about HW boxing if guys such as the Klitschkos fought out of the UK instead. Or look what happened in the UK when Haye hyped a fight with either Klitschko, how many new fans were around on ESB to support him all of a sudden? Two English casual fans that I had spoken with told me they enjoyed Haye vs Harrison! One even said it was a fantastic event
It would be nice to see a really good American HW though, black and slick I don't care, but one who can compete with the Klitschkos. The hype would create a lot of new fans in the US and bring the old fans back (also the bitching posters imo).
