How come Andre Ward never fought Kovalev straight away at 175?

So Ward is greater than Gokovkin? So what

Gokovkin won't be the first who failed to move up a division and fight the best there and he won't be the last.

Because Ward doesn't really like to fight. He likes money and wants to make a lot of it fighting easier opponents rather than the hardest opponents out there.

According to GGG's camp he's actually better suited for 168 than 160.

OK, not Wards greatest fan, but let's be real here.

He had great mgmt early on, boiling down to 160 as a young man, then moved to 168 and into contention.

Mgmt used his Olympic credentials to enter him into the S5 and those same credentials to impose his will on Showtime for the S5.

He strolled thru the S5 without having to fight a SP or the top SMW, who his mgmt PERSONALLY refused entry into the S5.

Ward fought the #3, #4, and #6 and #12 SMWs at the time and made fairly easy work of #'s 3,6, and 12.
He looked aweful in his foulfest vs Kessler, #4, and probably deserved a draw, but regardless, the W stands, just as much as Floyds W over Castillo 1.

Now, upon winning the S5, Showtime was looking to cash in big on their new p4p Superstar vs their already p4p star.

Bute v Ward, Showtime PPV. Ward, knowing the styles clash and Bute's L UC would put him down and out, ducked like we've not witnessed since Bowe v Lewis.

Bute froze in Nottingham and Ward got a W thru his Knight, Froch.

That said, Ward was the bigger man in all of his S5 matchups, and only Dawson, boiled down to 168, KOed in sparring, was bigger than him on fightnight.

Then ERod came fast and fat, but lost the wrestling match he tried to impose.

    Fast forward to Ward's comeback.

Here he sits, his protector passed, his division now ruled by his liege, Froch, who is looking to cashout big, or hang em up.

So Ward attempts to drag GGG N, but insists upon the tuneups. GGG is trying to fight 4X a yr, and signs other fights.

Ward then gets career 160lbr up to 172. Solid journeyman, but just that, nothing special in his return and got the expected result.

Then onto a more formidable opponent in Sully. Sully's the bigger man, the stronger man, but is completely overwhelmed by the huge speed disparity and Ward outclasses him.

Onto Clevely????...not sure, but with Nate's activity level and handspeed, certainly a solid opponent for preKovalev prep, while not risking a KO loss.

That would make for a solid yr of boxing for Ward, not the greatest, but certainly solid.

GGG otoh, doesnt necessarily NEED 3 fights at 168 to fight the best.

He's been averaging 3-4 fights a yr, and only since this bullshiit sidestepping by Martinez began, has his activity level dropped off some. So he doesnt need 3-4 tuneups.

1 tops, IMO, just to get used to the added lean muscle, to adapt his footwork for the loss of footspeed and handspeed that would come with the muscle.

Best prep for Ward would be Tony Dirrel, IMO. Maybe, Badou Jack would be better prep for Ward, but K2 wouldnt have the kindof cash needed to get Mayweather to sacrifice his only legit fighter. :think
