Arguello at 140 and 32 years of age was obviously still a very dangerous man. However, with over 80 fights in the bank, he was like any other great fighter who is starting to fade. His reflexes were still good, but not what they once were. His legs were still good, but again, not what they once were. Et, et. My argument of course, is that if Arguello at 28 was a natural 140 he would be superior to Pryor. Consider this; Arguello could CRACK at 140. Kevin Rooney, Billy Costello, Claud Noel, and Pat Jefferson all got knocked out at 140. So, if a blown up junior lightweight could bang like AA obviously could, what kind of right hand would a prime Arguello who is a natural 140 have? It would scare middleweights! In my opinion, in a p4p, prime for prime, sense Arguello is clearly the superior fighter. And, he obviously accomplished a whole lot more than Pryor did.
Let's take the whole scenerio of Alexis being a natural 140 fighter out of the equation. He wasn't. However, prime Alexis Arguello did have slightly better reflexes, and he probably moved better. I don't see how this would effect the fight to the extent of making Alexis the victor. Even in his prime, Alexis was a slow starter and would have never been able to throw as many punches as Pryor did from the opening bell to the 13th round. Pryor was landing three punches to Alexis one in every flurry, which is why I had Pryor ahead going into that final round. The commentators had it dead even, but I didn't see it that way. In any event, a prime Alexis still gets hit with Pryors shots because he never an elusive fighter, he just weaved his head from side to side. This was effective, but Pryor had underrated handspeed and a lot of his combinations he was mixing to the head and body. On this basis, I still see Alexis behind on the scorecards going into the 13th round. I also still see Alexis getting knocked out at that point. Arguello always had a good chin, and he showed it better than he ever had in the Pryor fight because he took right hands left right and centre, but he was hit with a peach in that final round. Prime Alexis still gets wobbled, and still gets stopped. Pryor was a man possessed, and I don't see how a 28 year old Alexis does better.
We'll never know. It's like debating with Sweet Pea over Arguello/PBF at 130. I say AA wins by late stoppage over 15 rounds, but PBF might win a decision over 12 rounds. Pea sees it differently. The only thing certain is that we will never know.
I was looking for you to give me some sort of reason as to why the fight would be different. Fair enough though. :good
Arguello had just about every punch in the book. Upstairs and downstairs, he could hurt you. The left hook to the body took out Kobayashi, but his right uppercut to the belly might've been his best punch downstairs.
Against Mancinni, who could defiitely take a punch, the right upper cut went high and hit Ray in the chest. It STILL spelled the beginning of the end.
Arguello started at 126. & moved up to 140 to fight Pryor. His big punch, while still strong is not as effective at the higher weight. Just like Trinidad moving up to Middleweight from Welterweight. he didn't have the pop he used to at Welter.
That's my point exactly. The version of Arguello that Pryor went life and death with was faded and ring worn, and fighting 2 divisions north of his prime.
