No but he gets in lots of fights outside the ring. Not per say a streetfighter in a cage or something.

Remember after the Gomi fight he announced that awaians are the best fighters because thats all they do in the island, fight.

Also this is the sme guy who punch a cop a few years back..Im sure he gets into scraps like nothin

Its his flexibility, he can use his legs like how most people use their arms. He perhaps isn't 'athletic' in the traditional sense of the word but physically he is something special, I don't know if his flexibility comes from his genetics or just him practicing alot.

He's not just good. He's in a league of his own. Physically speaking , Fedor doesn't look anything special though.

As for Penn. He's absolutely amazing on the ground. and he's a smart fighter too. And even though he doesn't look very "athletic" , he's got one major undeniable advantage.. He's very flexible.
No one is as flexible as he is in his division or even in the ufc. And he uses his flexibility as much as he can and that gives him a huge advantage on the ground.

And maybe that's partially the reason he was a prodigy in bjj...because even as a noob in this discipline...he was already pulling some weird and complicated moves that even veterans couldn't.

Having said all that i think his stand up is average...that's one of his major weakness imo.

I can't think of a great standup striker in the LW division, maybe Marcus Davis qualifies and perhaps Melvin Guillard.

And who has great striking in the WW's? BJ was outstriking GSP and GSP is thought to have the best striking in the WW's.

Its barely a 'major' weakness, very few can match his speed, reflexes, punching power on the feet.

BJ's standup is really good. Thats why BJ is the best around, imo. Anywhere you go with him youre in big trouble.

During the Stevenson fight i was like "wtf is stevenson standing with BJ??" Bj was completely toying with him. But i guess its better than going to the ground with him.

I think maybe the only "weakness" in BJ's game is his takedowns. A strong wrestler can give him some trouble. But BJ didnt even have to go for a takedown against Stevenson.. he just kept beating the **** out of him on the feet until he went down.

A good standup striker in LW = Gomi... who BJ beat on. He was in attendance at UFC 79.. so hopefully the UFC can get him under contract and put that fight together again.

Roger Huerta is pretty good on the feet too. Probably too wreckless though. BJ would probably capitalize on him quickly. But that kid has HEART.. and he doesnt tire at all going full pace for 3 rounds. Crazy cardio.

Actually a dream fight for me would be Nick Diaz vs Penn at 155.. if Diaz could actually get to that weight. I think that might be pushing it though. I think he's fighting at 160 now.. and that seems a bit small to me. I thought he looked scrawny at 170. Diaz standup is fun to watch.. and his jits is awesome. Same problem as BJ though.. his wrestling isnt good enough to take them to the ground at will. Bigger issue for Diaz than Penn.

Davis is a welterweight, and Guillard hits hard and is quick but lacks any sort of technical accumen. Gomi, Penn, and Mach Sakurai (if he could ever make LW again) really seem to be the class of that division on the feet.

Saying BJ is jsut average on the feet is doing him a great disservice. He has superb boxing. He landed jabs at will on Joe Daddy, tore GSP's face off, and uses uppercuts better than just about anybody. Top that all off with superb head movement, and a granite chin, and I don't see anyone he will match with getting the better of him on the feet. If he loses it will be a 5 round lay and pray after he gases.

Hmm.....I was sure Davis was a LW.
Anyway, that leaves him and Gomi and he not only beat Gomi but outstruck him and wobbled him badly in their fight.
If their is one weakness its his takedowns, thats not to say his takedowns are bad however, he took Gomi down at will. Also, BJ's takedown defence is incredible.

I guess another weakness is he doesn't really use kicks or knees.

BJs hands are so good he doesnt even have to use any kicks..Its heavy hands and a great jab like someone mentioned. Everybody talks about the BS mysterious thumb in GSPs eyes..lol..He was outjabbing GSP and GSPs face s started bruising...Thumb in the eyes he would have stopped, maybe its a punch in the eye..anyone thought of that?

I can never get over how he uses his legs. It's basically like he has another set of arms that are bigger and stronger. He nailed Joe with that same arm trap RNC he got with Pulver with, so simple and basic (like most of his work) but executed flawlessly and brilliant.

Agreed, he brings skill and integrity into MMA hes almost like Floyd in boxing. .
He is precise with his moves, He brings his specialty (BJJ) and showcases it, hes never lucky when he would just throw a haymaker everything has a purpose.

I love GSP too but he too can fall into shoot Ill just take this guy down because my other tactic wouldnt work..Illl just hold him down...

With BJ and Anderson its different..thats why I put those two as tops along with Fedor. They set out something theyd do and they will do it. It really is by whatever they want and whenevr they want.
