How come HBO doesn't air past great fights?

Or is there a way to buy them besides from collectors in which the picture quality isn't that good?

I didn't start following boxing closely until about 5 years ago. And the crap they show on ESPN Classic is a joke. Where are the Hopkins/Trinidad or Tyson/Lewis fights, etc? Are they the exlusive property of HBO? If so, i wish they would sometimes re-air past great fights they televised.

I don't know...I've been curious about that myself. ESPN Classic has been getting better about showing fights from the last 10-15 years. Maybe eventually they'll be able to show more of the type of fights you're talking about.

They recently showed Barrera-Hamed and Barrera-Pacquiao 1 from 01 and 03 but obviously we know why those fights were shown. I wanna be having trouble sleeping sometime at like 4:00 am turn on the TV and see HBO 2 showing Trinidad-Vargas or something for no reason.

ESPN doesn't show HBO fights IIRC. And HBO PPV fights broadcasted a lot of the major fights of this era.

I mean is there some licensing issue or something? It's obvious HBO has access to all these fights but they never show it. It's a real shame. It would be great if they had a weekly re-airing of a great fight with some background information leading up the fight. It would be great for my DVD collection.

:good Even if they would play a classic fight on any Saturday when a live fight is not scheduled, I'd be happy.

I remember about a year ago, they played a special 30 minute recap of the Leonard/Hagler fight and it was entertaining as heck.

I know ESB board has some influence. Maybe we can get some petition going to have HBO re-air some of their past fights. I'm sure we can get hundreds if not thousands of signatures.

For some reason, I think HBO does not own rights to Hopkins/Trinidad. (King?)

Whenever they do a greatest of thing for Hopkins, they don't use any highlights from that bout. They had the commentary (very bad commentary by Foreman), but I think I may have even read that this is the case.

    Does anyone know?

I just don't see why HBO doesn't do any re-airing of previous fights unless it's to hype up an upcoming fight. It's obvious that boxing fans would LOVE to see them regularly. And it only takes up an hour a week. They re-air the same shows so many times. Why not throw in a past fight?
