How come its not called the fab 5 era?

Comes down to charisma and knockouts I think. If you dont speak great English you have to have a selling point. Duran's snarl, to go with his greatness gave him that. Don't know if this is true but got told a story of his first night in a US hotel, his managers went in his room there was an awful smell. They opened one of the cupboards and it was even worse. They saw bunch of towels in there that he'd defecated on because he'd never used an indoor toilet before.

 

It probably would be called if Bentitez fought Hagler. But the Fab Four was the name given the Beatles, so it was already known to the general public. It already had marketing appeal.

 

Werent Dave Clark Five called the Fab Five though? Far better band.

 

I've no idea. I can't imagine the adjective ever shared the same hotel as them.

Maybe Toto were called the 'Fab Six'? Then they could have added Benitez and Marcos Geraldo.

it was never that benitez wasent great enough, it was just the four fighter rivalry that duran, hearns, leonard and hagler had. very intense and very personal with any combination of the four (maybe not so much duran-hearns).

 

Well would you be pursuing a rivalry if you were Duran after that???!!!

 

I think Ive mentioned this same thing at one point,,, Benitez was certainly good enough & I believe if he had fought Hagler at one point they would be the fab 5 because the round robin would be complete... I think the fact that Benitez never fought MMH + the fact that he ranks a little lower than the other 4 in ATG ranks makes it easier for him to be left out.

yep because what was special about the fab four is they all fought each other Wilfredo never fought Marvin so he cant be included.

I like calling the Fab Four the Four Kings and Wilfredo the Fifth Prince

Marcos Geraldo ****ing hell i forgot about him i watched his fight with Hgaler the other day and his fight with Hearns before that he fought Ray leoanrd as well didnt he?

How random is it that he fought 3 of them?

 

Benitez fire burnt out before a chance a MW. Maybe another reason why only 4.

 

I think Benitez would have got destroyed by Marvin at 160lb. His style would not have helped him against a buzz saw like Hagler, and the size difference would have been clear.

 

the man is head and shoulders above Chavez, Duran, and is borderline Robinson/Armstrong/Pep....he was mythic, and I think his greatness is so out there, its hard to have comprehended....especially in the modern era were "greatness" is often a word thrown around or no longer believed in....he burnt out too young, and is often remembered for that more so than his actual greatness in the ring...there will never be another like him in our time....people go on about Pacquia, but this man was special.

 

I think Benitez was a special fighter, but he lost to Leonard and Hearns because he wasn't as good as they were. Not because he "burnt out".

 

I agree but his loses to SRL, Hearns and to a lesser extent Hamsho is part of why not Fav 5. And no chance to avenge them.
