guesswork on my part that japan boxing commision refused to ratify what they perceived as yet another diluted title when the ibf set up

they do not recognise the WBO either.

    no real surprise.

ring does not recognise wbo title fights as such and the japanese have justextended that to the ibf.

ibf has been proven to be corrupt, you have to pay to get your fighters ranked and are a new organistaion around early 80`s from memory.

they gained legitamatcy in america because they gave the stripped holmes there title.

Because the WBC and WBA had been in existance 20 years before the IBF, and of course even longer with the WBO(which as pointed out they don't recognise).

They just thought that another 'World title' was too many so they just stuck to two(good decision imo), it has nothing to do with corruptness. The WBC is every bit as corrupt as the other titles(if not more so) and the IBF is probably the least corrupt now after the FBI's intervention. That's why the IBF are always stripping champions for not defending mandatories, they have to apply everything to the letter of their laws.

Thanks for the response, so how does this work, are Japanese fighters prohibited from fighting for those titles or just not on Japan soil?

They simply don't recognize as THE world title(s) like WBA and WBC, the ones with the longest history.

Pretty much like WBO in the US. The title that had just as many division #1s in the last 5 years as any other is not even ranked by many US magazines like yahoo or the ring for years (RJJ vs. DM debate). Or like IBO, a title held by some good name fighters, but most regions don't recognize it as a legitimate world title.

there seriously needs to be one world championship belt per division.
they can have 5 continent champs belts.
euro champ, americas champ, african champ, asian champ, and oceania champ.
    then just one world champ.
    that would be great.

Contrary to popular belief this wouldn't actually be great. It would just concentrate more power in the hands of a smaller number of corrupt people looking after their own self interests.

Which is how come the different sanctioning bodies ended up getting set up in the first place.

    ....Nah.

It would be great. I could think of nothing better for the sport!

The general public would actually know who some of the champions are, rather than having to learn the WBO, WBA, WBC, IBF "champions" as well as a few others who actually think their title means something. Jack Dempsey, the heavyweight champion of the world. Joe Louis, the heavyweight champion of the world. Rocky Marciano, the heavyweight champion of the world. Muhammad Ali, the heavyweight champion of the world. Who is it today? It's absolute rubbish... and a single world title would go a LONG way to making the sport big again, IMO. Rankings etc. would have to be done based on aggregating the rankings of certain experts or something like that, in order to avoid corruption (as much as possible).

As in you can't get an IBF title fight sanctioned in Japan. The country's boxing board won't do it(or any World title other than WBA, WBC).

So you just can't fight for the IBF title in Japan.

I wasn't aware of this but I don't recall any Japanese fighters (or foreign fighters fighting under Teiken like Valero) ever wearing a belt other than those of the WBC or WBA so it makes sense. Very interesting.

Now does this mean that the IBF, in turn, refuses to recognize Japanese fighters as mandatories?

Agreed. Very few truly original topics come up on here.

This is yet another reason I love Japan.
