well jabs usually initiate action..counter guys want you to jab so they can counter it

its funny those guys are the best boxers out there and they arent jabbers

they can jab but they dont base their attack off of a jab

I think in Floyd case its because he is always anticipating when
to pot shot with his right hand, he prefers to hook with the left instead
of jabbing. Left Hooks and Straight rights are where its at for Floyd.

The jab sets up your offence, to counterpunch feeds off of incoming offense.

The Jab for counterpunchers is usually more defensive.

Pea Whitaker and Winky were great counter-punchers and both had great jabs.

    Hagler also.

Possibly the 3 greatest southpaw jabs ever.

    southpaws though

if you're a southpaw with a great jab, you should use it. It's not common and most people don't know how to deal with it

Right. Floyd normally uses his jab if/when he is backing up, however, he scores pretty well with it when he throws it a little more than normal (look at last two fights).

you don't want to set off your position.

if you can touch your opponent they can touch you. because you are then in distance. and you want to be the first to start. your continuously bound and ready to let loose. so by throwing a jab it maybe alows you the chance to get in and land the more punches in the round but its pretty small reward if by round 6 they have you figured out with distance and rhythmn

going back to the manny-marquez. had marquez threw more jabs manny would of been able to know when to rush. but also mannys workrate and quickness of punch allows him to tag and hustle marquez out the fight.

its why they are so well matched. each other weakness is each others advantage to the other side.

You're right, elite fighters aren't one dimensional though so although Floyd is primarily a counterpuncher, he is more than capable of leading and initiating the action, that's when the Jab becomes an offensive tool.

Jmm is as technical as it gets. He's more about positioning or as he says utilizing his " zona de combate" or combat zone. The jab in his case when he does use it its mostly used as a lure to make the other fighters instinctively punch or fight back. When Jmm jabs to the body, hes already expecting Pacman to hit back. Instead of getting out of range like Floyd mostly does, Manny just covers up a target for Juan or he counterpunches Juan. When Jmm usually leads, he doesnt get great results.

Most of these guys do use the jab.

In Floyd's case when he goes on the offensive attack with his high guard,he jabs a lot. When he uses distance to his advantage,he jabs to the body more often, and better, than any active fighter I can think of.

JMM uses two fisted attacks so often that his jab is irrelevant. He too, like Mayweather, will use distance at times and will jab often.

It's amazing that fight fans aren't better analyst of the sport. These guys have excellent jabs but dare to defy tradition,I respect that a lot, because it's more difficult to execute such a game plan.
