The US used to send college players to the Olympics. They used to rountinely get whupped. Someone i guess must have petitioned the Olympic commitee to allow pro`s hence the creation of the Dream Team in 1992.

Good question by the way. I was wondering the same, especially when I seen Pacman carrying the flag. I just assumed he was going to fight, as why have someone carry the flag who isn't going to participate in the events?

Because he's a national hero in the Philipines. Pros aren't going to be allowed to box in the Olympics anytime soon.

Until 1992, the Olympics didn't allow pros from any sports. Ever since they changed the rules, they made it so that the international governing body for the sport makes the decisions (which is why the Dream Team in 1992 was the first basketball team with pros on it). Certain governing bodies (basketball, tennis, baseball, etc.) allow pros, certain don't (boxing, ice skating, gymnastics, etc.). For boxing, IIRC, they don't allow pros and have certain age limits (17 to 33 I think).

Not sure why pros would want to compete in amateur rules boxing anyway. It's a completely different sport.

Bingo. Someone posted what I thought after watching one of the Olympic fights. It was to boxing as fencing is to sword fighting. Certainly this was not the case in all bouts. You had some guys willing to mix it up. Some were trying to score points, touches, just like fencing. Not the same at all.

U.S men's basketball had lost exactly 2 games(they were shafted in 1 game) prior to 1992. They also usually blew out their opponents. However, they did come in 3rd in 1988.
