Seriously, I lose count of how many times Joe Calzaghe is brought up on this website. This must be the only website where he's constantly brought up. There are fighters like McCallum, Kalambay who get less air time than Joe, and they were equally as good, so to me that says, that American fight fans are extremely bias toward Joe, or that his record NEEDS defending cause it doesn't speak for itself, or maybe its somewhere in the middle? either way, is there another fighter who divides opinion as much as Joe?

It seems all the undefeated fighters throughout history have ? over their resumes, is that a coincidence?

 

buddy, a good 90% of the joe calazaghe threads are started by one person. so its not exactly ESB has an infatuation with him, its just that bailey has a homo-erotic obsession over him and throws a hissy fit whenever another fighter in his weight division is outshining him. just take a quick glance at his post history, its quite disturbing. if its not about calazaghe its something thats of relation pertaining to him

 

yet another attempt to discredit ward. noone said the ward win qwas monumental. its his best win so far but he is still so young that he will plenty more that trump the kessler one. beating froch and bute most certainly would. when its all said and done he willbe ranked ahead of calzaghe. as must as most of you ward haters dont want to hear that it will happen if he continues to fight at this level and beat everyone in his path.

 

the ones bringing up calzaghe are those threatened by ward and must constantly find ways to discredit or bad mouth him. its a certain contingent of people on here that most dont take seriously regardless.

I always held onto the idea that Eubank was in a decline when fighting Calzaghe, but that shouldnt have been an issue for a man of his experience to fight a green fighter like Calzaghe. It was a very Good win

Ward vs Kessler is also a good win. Although Ward used dirty tactics which may have tainted that performance

Calzaghes win is greater imo, but both are generally good wins

He's already more or less guaranteed to face top SMW's in his next two straight bouts: Froch/Johnsin winner and then Bute (since Showtime snatched him up with the express purpose of matching him with the S6 winner).

After that, he can force complete four-belt unification of the division (never done before by anyone, even Calzaghe) by targeting the WBO champ...which will probably still be Stieglitz unless someone better than his usual class of challenger is willing to go to Germany.

Then, after he's settled all that business around 2013 or so there should be some new stars in the division who currently aren't well known but are working their way up.

Kid Chocolate, Marco Periban, DeGale, Rodriguez, Estrada, and maybe the likes of Golovkin and Korobov moving up from MW - these are all guys who could plausibly be contending around the time Ward finishes up with Froch/Johnson, Bute, and Stieglitz.

Unifying and then cleaning out the division would be a unique feat at super middleweight. It would surpass Calzaghe's achievements (although right now Calzaghe has the best single win and the better overall resume - due to it still being early in Ward's career).

Ward has shown no shyness about taking on anyone...although if there is a criticism to be drawn, it's similar to one of the big knocks on Calzaghe...preferring to perform at home.

I think your answer lies in the fact that Eubank had 21 title fights, and Kessler had only 9. Eubank had been in wars before the Calzaghe fight and had been fighting at the world level for a lot longer than Kessler had. They may have both been 31, but Eubank's ring life was nearing its end.

That being said, Chris Eubank and Joe Calzaghe were both fighters from the UK. The UK took notice. To this day, they call that Calzaghe's coming out party. Ward is from the US and Kessler is from Denmark. I'm certain both countries took notice and people call that Ward's coming out party. It's just that when you have something like that in America, you get a little more attention than if you have something like that in the UK.

Proper ownage!! It's like night and day when someone with real knowldge of the sport AND the situations post vs. someone who digs up records at boxrec like Phailey does.

Kessler was prime and a champion whereas Eubank was faded and not the man of Benn 1 or the series with Watson. No one is saying that it's not a good win but you can't deny that Eubank had declined though he was NOT shot. I question whether Eubank was ever shot because he gave a very good account of himself against Thompson in the rematch.

To be fair, Ward-Kessler was a GOOD win as Kessler was past prime like Eubank was(maybe not as much as he had one of his best wins a fight later against Froch in a could've gone either way kind of fight). Admitingly Eubank did drain himself, something Kessler didn't do.

Look, I HATE Calzaghe's style with a passion but the man was a great champion and the best most dominant SMW ever. I wish his opposition was better but he did get every major SMW belt and would **** on just about every SMW now(it's only a toss up in fights between Ward, Froch, and maybe Bute). The man was great, deserves to be a HOF'er, and I wish his career is more acclaimed later on.
