How come Wilder isn't improving?

    Fighters often regress. Especially punchers.

I actually think he has improved, albeit not necessarily in the skills department. He's a lot more relaxed and patient now (relatively speaking) and seems to pick his power shots a lot better. He's also upped his competition considerably from a few years back. Ortiz might not be the bogeyman all his fans seem to think he is, but he's still a hell of a lot better than the likes of Szpilka, Molina and Duhaupas. Breazeale isn't any great shakes either, but he was a borderline top ten guy when Wilder fought him and predicted to give him a hard fight.

I think Wilder has realized, or felt, that he won't ever improve his boxing skills to any great degree so he's just working on his strengths. There'll come a point where that won't bail him out, but till that time I don't see any reason why he should change.

I think Wilder has gained supreme faith in his right hand, and knows he only has to land it once or twice to start the ball rolling for a KO. His entire gameplan is centred around that mindset. He can lose rounds, whiff punches, be made to look like a fool, so long as he eventually lands his money punch. That seems to be his mission plan.

His opponents better be thankful his boxing skills are not really improving because if they did he would be nigh on unstoppable.

Can you imagine what a machine he would be if Manny Steward got hold of him, he would keep that dynamite right hand and gain other skills.

Which will have course backfire badly at some point but it's been working fine this far so why fix it right.

Pretty much. I mean, what's the alternative for him? He's in his mid-thirties now. No time to start tampering with fundamental things that could totally screw up your place on the pyramid. Just focus on your strengths and hope no one (cough Usyk) comes along to spoil the party.

Anybody who saying Wilder is not improving haven't been watching him fight enough. Wilder's timing has been his biggest weapon other than his straight right hand. He's setting traps better to land his straight right hand as well. Defense wise, he's using his feet and speed to move around the ring and get out of the way of punches. He doesn't look pretty at times boxing, but he gets the job done.
