Toney probably blew up after the McCallum fight and had to spend his camp for Tiberi starving on a treadmill to make weight. Never quite understood how a guy with the discipline and toughness to become such a slick fighter lacked the discipline to control his diet.
How could Soldier Bartfield be reported as having gotten the better of a 14lbs heavier Harry Greb in November 1917, when a 71-25-22 Jackie Clark, who only had 8lbs on Bartfield, was reported as having the better of him just 3 months earlier?
Roland LaStarza (51-2), coming off a win over Dan Bucceroni and about a year away from challenging Rocky Marciano for the title, loses to 14-9-2 clubfighter Rocky Jones. And Jones never won another fight.
The great Italian Nino Benvenuti defended his WBC middleweight title against HOFer Luis Rodriguez via knockout in the 11th round. A few months later, he lost to Tom Bethea. https://boxrec.com/wiki/index.php/Nino_Benvenuti_vs._Tom_Bethea_(1st_meeting)
Did you see Magri vs. Laciar? I thought the consensus was that Magri was gifted a decision at home? I never saw the fight, so I'd like to hear informed opinions.
I did not. I recall reading about it in the magazines at the time but don't recall what was said. From the bare writeup at Boxrec, it said Magri was decked in the second round (which I didn't remember) and the score of Sid Nathan was 88 1/2 to 87 1/2 for Magri, which might translate to 5-2-3 in rounds (counting the extra point for the knockdown). It sounds like a fairly close contest.
Thanks. I've always wanted to see the fight, because I've always wondered about what would've happened if Chan-hee Park took the mandatory fight with Magri (I just started a thread about this today in fact), and this was probably the best fight to gauze what prime Magri would look versus world class fighters.
