I've heard that he knocked out tiger flowers (I might be mixing it up with someone else, but I think it was tiger) because he had to feel for tiger in the ring before he threw the punch since he could barely see.

Now I know sam langford is one of the baddest dudes of all time. But it doesn't make sense, if it's true, that he could be fighting atg boxers while being nearly blind - and winning as well

In the same way that Beethoven composed some of the greatest music in history whilst deaf.

Blind in medical terms, can imply some vision.

Obviously it wasn't totally blind.. I think that is obvious.. and besides.. I thought it was only in one eye mostly.

You can be certified blind and still be able to make out silouettes. I had a family friend growing up who was legally blind but who could still move largely autonomously thanks to a partial ability to distinguish vague shapes and changing in light.

That would help Langford. Also...I'm not sure how scientifically reliable optometry was in Langford's day. Would standard eye examines in that era measure up to the rigor of today?

And maybe...just maybe...the truth about the extent of Sam's blindness was stretched just a touch. We really have no way of knowing.

I could fight bums if I was blind too so why give him a cookie for doing it?

Greb beat him, he beat Greb and then most agreed that Greb should have won the third.

Again another thread about fighters with no footage. How do you know Tiger Flowers was a good fighter? How do you know Greb was a good fighter? Not much footage of them if any right? Again but you heard they were great.

Those blindness stories you sometimes hear about old age fighters are probably just rumors and exaggerations.

Langford and Greb were true. Hell we've seen guys fight blind in one eyes all the way to the '60's.
