How could Tyson's post exile comeback have been as successful as Ali's?

wrote and explained above why it doesn't matter. Lewis and Holy defeated in 1996 would look no more successful today than Berbick, Holmes or Spinks did in the 1980s. Especially if Tyson destroyed them physically as he usually did with his rivals. Similarly, if Lewis had been even better and badly beaten Vitali in 2003, his victory would not be so appreciated today because Vitali without one eye would not have achieved so much success, he would have ended his career and, apart from Lewis, would only be known for his embarrassing defeat against Byrd.
Perhaps defeating Bowe in 1996, right after Bruno, and then Moorer, who fits his style, would have given him more hype. Such a paradox that sometimes it's better to be in the right place at the right time than to be the real best in the world.

Not really. Most people I know thought Golota won. Wasn't that close to be honest. Cheers!!

It was and fans' scorecards on Eye On The Ring show that. How did you score it?

That’s easy to say with hindsight. Ahead of his fight with Tyson, Lewis had only just avenged the Rahman mishap. Ahead of his fight with Tyson Holyfield had been kayoed by Bowe. They were all past prime.

In other breaking news the sun is hot and water wet chok. We all remember Tyson was a monstrous fave over Holyfield and betting was close between he and Tyson........but he got pumped.

Yeah he got pumped. history shows this.

but You said “he was never going to beat them” well that was not a unanimous assumption ahead of either of those fights. So your statement doesn’t really work.

Had Tyson rode off into the sunset to grow weed and never box again right after the Seldon fights Mike would have went down as quite the superstar. Holyfield might not ever have became Holyfield. Without Tyson, even Lewis could have only went down as the guy who survived the era with the most wins over reasonable opponents. They both badly needed Tyson on their resume.

I think that sentiment was true in his immediate post-retirement years. Over the last 10 years or so Tyson has had an incredible rebrand among the general public and to the general public/casual fans he's probably the 2nd "greatest" HW ever after Ali.

The hardcore boxing fans who are a minority of fans, sure, they know his career had lost potential.

Well one can hardly say beat Holyfield and Lewis when he couldn't. You obviously don't understand the thread.

Better even if off topic per the thread ask.

But yes he would have been helped. All these guys arguing he was shot and never going to succeed would be running rampant telling us he would have decimated Holyfield and Lewis. I guess in SOME peoples imagination he would have matched and exceeded Ali

Yes that would have indeed been the consequence of Tyson retiring right after Seldon. Guys would be running rampant telling us Tyson would have decimated Lewis and Holyfield. We have at least been spared some misery.
