I've been hearing for a long time that the WW division is one of the deepest in the sport. Howver, there have been calls from all corners for Mayweather to fight a "strong, prime, natural elite welterweight". He was actually criticized when he was trying to make the Pac fight for ducking elite natural welters in favor of a much smaller fighter. Now there are grumblings that he's choosing an old, rusty far-past-prime fighter instead of an elite natural welter. So I started thinking...who would satisfy all the critics? If the welterweight division is so deep, why are the natural, prime, elite welterweights so hard to find? And it made me wonder...is the welterweight division actually deep?
when you think about it, nobody is a natural welter. Most move up in weight into welter. e.g. floyd, shane, oscar, cotto, judah.
What other division currently consists of multiple atg's, multiple current p4p top 10 fighters, and multiple genuine stars of the sport? And to answer your other question, the guy in my avy would suffice.
Cotto- natural welter. Moved to welter when it was too unnatural to get down to light welter. Mosley: Grew into welterweight normally and naturally. He was the 154-pound linear champ. He wasn't a natural light middle, really. Floyd: Floyd is a natural welterweight, which is exactly why he didn't bother making the catchweight at 144 for the Marquez fight. If he hadn't naturally filled out to be a welterweight, it wouldn't have been a problem. Judah: Technically started his career with eight welterweight fights before earning a title at light welterweight. Has fought at 154 also. He's not a big welterweight, but it's natural weight. Oscar: ODLH was an enormous Super Featherweight that couldn't even stay there long. He grew into welterweight quite naturally but he shouldn't be in this discussion, because he fought at light middleweight against Floyd and deadweight against Pacquiao, so he hasn't been in the picture really for several years. My point is, some people are really only natural to one weight class in their career, they don't grow into anything else but pretty much everyone you just mentioned doesn't fit that category. All of them have been very natural welterweights. The two smallest on that list have both been linear champions at welter and both fought at light middleweight.
It was extremely deep but recently circumstances have changed: Cotto has been battered twice thus making him less formidable, Paul Williams moved up in weight and Margarito was bashed and banned by an aging legend. Given that we currently have the two greatest boxers in a generation, not to mention Mosely, Clottey, Berto and a damaged Cotto, campaigning in the same division, it's still a very good division, but just not as much depth as there was.
Pacquiao, Shane, Floyd, Clottey, Cotto, Judah, Paul Williams (well, he said he can), Berto, Margarito. Just to name a few that are still active, bar berto/PW most of the A fighters are in their 30s though - Mosley pushing 40. jWW (or Super lightweight) is getting interesting with Bradley and Khan leading the pack. 126 lb is getting interesting too with the young ones mixing in (Juanma/Gamboa).
it's pretty deep before about 2/3 ears ago. now shane, cotto, margo, williams, clottey and pac had been involved in fights one way or another. now it's time for floyd to pick up what is left of them.
