I think it is fair to say that we all know that heavyweight has been a joke division for quite some time now. However, as of recently the tides seem to be changing for the better. There seems to be legitimate contenders, with personalities to match, capable of bringing the division back into the realm of competitiveness; as well as, prospects emerging that will continue to ensure the rebirth of the division. I have always viewed Wladimir as a great fighter who, most likely, will never get his just do because of a lack of quality opposition. With the current influx of potential talent at hand, Wlad can surely squelch some of that future tarnishing by charging head on into to new pool. However, this is not to be the case... How is it that in a division with all the new potential we receive this..... Klitschko Vs. Leapai??? Leapai? The guy hasn't fought anyone of merit.... 3 of his last 5 fights weren't even scheduled for championship rounds. 2 of those 3 were only scheduled for 8 rounds. And, before his 5 most recent fights he lost to , in my view, most formidable opponent on his resume.... The dreaded Kevin Johnson ... Does barely besting Boytsov, who has fought nothing but nobodies, really earn him that title shot? IBF, and WBC don't even rank Leapai in the top 15... WBA ranks him 11th.... Yet somehow WBO ranks him as the #1 contender, and so he gets a shot... I never though there would come the day I would miss Don King's reptilian ass. But, every time I see a fight like this being made that day draws closer.
He earned it like Maidana earned a shot at Mayweather. He beat a hype job who is little more than a bum.
That's a pretty good comparison. And if someone KO's bumbasher Wilder next year it will earn him a shot at the WBC belt. Same sh|t all over again.
If Hryunov wins the purse bid and delays the fight until May, I'd say Wladimir should drop the WBO belt and fight a top ten HW: Pulev, Solis, or Fury.
The problem is though if Wlad drops the WBO belt he will NEVER get it again, unless he gets a voluntary title unification. It is yet unclear if he can ever get a fight with the next WBC belt holder, so dropping the WBO would diminish the chances of ever seeing a unified HW belt holder.
Not just that. It would create a "new" championship with non deserving guys going at it. And it prevents the real top fights from being made even more. Dropping the belt would be bad for the division. But I guess some only care about that their hero gets a shot at some paper belt with actually having a chance to win. I assure you that if Wlad actually drops the belt, the fans of the guy fighting Leapai for it would defend the legitimacy of that bout.
It was billed as an eliminator so yer. It shouldn't, but just because it was set up in order to legitimise a Boytsov title challenge doesn't mean the sanctioning body can renegade on the original promise. What do you want them to do, turn around and say "We know you won an eliminator which we set up, but if we're being honest we all thought you were going to get battered, and we just don't see you as a legitimate challenger"?
This is exactly what happened. It's the 'light" version of Mercer vs journeyman Ferguson I in wich the winner (Jesse) got the shot at Bowe, although in that case the IBF wanted none of it while the WBA just had to go with the flow :good
No. Broner was WBA world champ by beating Magic man. Marcos has beaten top contenders in the division. Boystov was put in #1 spot without beating anybody from the WBO top 10. At least Broner beat the #1 guy. Who did Boystov beat? The situations are a world apart.
It's been like this ever since belts have been split up. I would say since the 1990s. The WBO's rise in the late 90s made things worse.
