How did boxers get paid in the old days?

    The larger purses would be paid by cheque, as was the case with Jack Johnson and Jack Dempsey for example.

    The smaller purses would often be paid by cash, and would likely pass through the hands of the promoter before they got to the fighter.

    A fighter on the local lever circuit, was likely to see his payment cash in hand.
