As much as I love the buster Douglas story. That was Tyson at rock bottom. Lethargic from the first bell. No surprise considering the lifestyle he lived. Was always going to happen. As much as Douglas was brilliant on the night and having all the tools to be a good fighter. Tyson beat the guys with ease with the same tools as buster had. About 8 guys on Tyson's resume would have beat Tyson that night for me. Guy was badly prepared looked depressed/lethargic. Buster took advantage of it. But other guys would have done the same.

But a guy who had just lost his mother wasn’t depressed.. did he magically become healthy again months later when he went back to KOing guys in 1 and a yr later when he beat Razor Ruddock who was much stronger than Buster but didn’t have the same skill set.. Buster just applied the right game plan (effectively using a 12 inch reach advantage)and stuck to it the whole fight even after being knocked down..

Side note: Douglass was suppose to be a stay busy fight leading into what maybe could have been the best HW fight ever..
The world was robbed of seeing an absolute prime Mike Tyson(undisputed HW champ) vs an absolute prime Evander Holyfield (Just relinquished the Undisputed CW title to move up to HW).. up until that point Holyfied had KO’d 6 top contenders in the HW division in what was building up to be an Ali-Frazier 1 caliber fight (Based on both guys records and accomplishment at the time of the fight)

Tyson was done after Spinks. He was focused & motivated up until then. Plenty thought Spinks was the biggest threat to him & so did Tyson himself. When it was over in 91 seconds, really, what else was there? He'd unified all the world titles & claimed the lineal championship.

He got in a street fight with Mitch Green after the Spinks fight & broke his hand. That resulted in the longest layoff of his professional career to that point.

When he resumed against Frank Bruno in Feb 1989, he was sloppy. Bruno was ordinary but hit him with a lot of punches that he never would have been hit with previously.

He no longer sparred with Oliver McCall who could take Tyson's heat in sparring better than anyone. So he was no longer getting the same standard preparation that he previously got. With the gap between fights, preparation was more important than ever.

Second fight back was Carl Williams who had been competitive over 12 against Larry Holmes. The Truth had a glass jaw & it was over in 93 seconds. Not what Tyson needed. He needed rounds to get back into top fighting shape.

Next fight was Buster Douglas. How did Douglas win? He had a great jab & fought a hell of a fight. But he didn't beat the version of Mike Tyson that Spinks & those before him had fought.

Douglas was motivated and ALSO used the correct strategy of putting it on Tyson between Tysons attacks.

Mikes style was beginning to get figured out, someone was gonna take him at some point.

This. A guy that was in the right place at the right time and was 10/10 mentally, emotionally and physically prepared to take full advantage of it. He really looked good in that fight. Shame he couldn't keep it going.
