Its such a incredible number. I mean Tito/Oscar only did 1.4 and that was a huge fight. Mayweather wasnt even a big star when he fought Oscar. It beat Tyson/Lewis which is incredible considering it was a Non Heavyweight fight and like I said despite Oscars huge fame Mayweather wasnt even well known. What was it that made it so popular? It must of been one hell of a promotion and im sure Mayweathers antics helped the buys

He wasn't a big PPV star but there was no doubt that he was the best in the business and really pushed himself as the bad guy to sell the fight, so everyone went out and bought it hoping Oscar could shut him up.

The best part of the promotion was Mayweather's 'Golden Girl' chicken.

The 1st ever 24/7 also played a big part in the hype machine.

 Yeah the chicken was hilarious.

But yeah Mayweather´s undefeated record, and playing the bad guy made the fight huge. Both Mayweather and DLH were major factors selling this fight. Many fans wanted Oscar to beat the best boxer in the world, but most of them I think wanted to see Mayweathers mouth shut because he was so disrespectful

Oscar, still the most popular fighter in the sport, on the upswing after ripping up Mayorga and taking a world title.

Oscar brings the hispanic community, females fans and casual fans. Floyd brings the black community and the hip hop communtity. Throw in boxing fans and the 24/7 show and BOOM! The fight was massive - I was in Vegas for it and the place was BUZZING!

There were 10,000 people at the weigh in. The biggest crowd that has ever attended one.

    AND

It was a Mexican holiday so it becomes EVEN MORE of an event!

    They count theatre seats.

My source told me that they did way under million and that they put theatre seats as PPV buys.

    typical *****s :patsch

Boxing has been very quiet to the mainstream for years since Lewis/Tyson. The public was waiting for a huge mega boxing event to come along and it was the perfect opportunity for this fight to be made.

There's been a demand for the fight eversince Oscar won his title against Mayorga. Floyd had been scrutinized for not fighting challenging competition and this fight was perceived as competitive on paper. It was promoted perfectly, the fight could of easily been made for November instead of Baldomir with plenty of time for promotion but held it back to capitalize on Cinco de Mayo since the Mexican fanbase had a huge disliking towards Mayweather at the time and Dela Hoya was of Mexican decent.

24/7 is also heavily credited, it was new and different, it was basically a 1 hour advertisement for the fight every week.It gave a good idea of which role the fighters played. Everyone in mainstream knew who Oscar was and perceived him as the good guy since the opponent he was facing was an arrogant disrespectful loud mouth jackass whom was perceived as the bad guy.

    Good vs. Evil

It sells much more than you all think.

Not surprising. It was called the World Awaits, it was highly anticipated. They did a great job promoting it. Most popular fighter and ultimate good guy of the sport vs the trash talking pound for pound number one bad guy. It was seen as DLH's last chance to get that career defining win. Mayweather got alot of exposure from the Gatti fight, but he was no household name and I don't attribute much of it's success to him. If it had happened earlier in DLHs career, I don't think it would have generated near as much interest.

Floyd invented 24/7.He antagonized the much beloved De la Hoya, helping greatly in the classic good v evil scenario. The Mexicans vs The Blacks undercurrent, the two greatest boxing traditions ever(#1Blacks,#2Mexicans).Add the fact that we had a bona fide superstar vs a certified boxing star and the casual fans came.Kaboom!!2.4 million buys in the U.S. alone.
