How did Duran restrain himself from murdering Rocky here?

People hate on sly alot but i'm sure he can handle himself. We are talking about a guy who has sparred with Duran, Tarver, probably Leonard, Morrison even Mr T, Creed, Drago etc are good fighters.

When you say 'sparred' you mean 'practiced choreography', innit? :huh

i know nothing about Mr T, but i like to think any of the older wrestlers who treated it as a craft and an art more than a soap opera could do fairly well in a fight if they had to. of course they would be out struck by a boxer, but someone like Hogan in his day was very, very strong. all one needs to do is look at Brock's success in the UFC to see where size and strength alone(i know he wrestled in college but that's not my point) can get you. And Hulk Hogan was one of the original 'size and strength' guys to model after.

During a promotional appearance for "Raging Bull" on The Today Show (at least I believe that's where I saw it), LaMotta claimed that he'd trained DeNiro to the point where he might have been a top 20 middleweight had he been competing professionally. (As he was in his late 30s by this time, that would have been a neat trick.) Jake said he instructed DeNiro not to hold back in sparring, and in amused fashion described a variety of facial injuries he sustained as a result of this. (Mostly hype, I imagine.)

Ironic, that as he's gotten older, DeNiro much more resembles Graziano than LaMotta.

Stallone: You know, I learned my lesson. You think that you play the role long enough, and you assume, “Oh, I can compete with a professional.” Well, I had that scenario set up. In Rocky III I decided I was going to use a professional athlete – this is before Mr. T came along. The first fellow I brought in the ring, I brought in Joe Frazier. Joe Frazier got in the ring, and I’ll never forget, he was wearing a green suit, he just took his shirt off – he was wearing his street pants, his street shoes – put on the gloves and again, within less than 30 seconds, he came across the ring and cracked me. He gave me four stitches over one eye. I was looking at the lights, I couldn’t believe it. My fantasy was completely destroyed that you can last more than however long it takes a professional athlete to actually get to you, that’s how long you last in the ring. That’s how long it takes.

The next guy who came in – and this was idiotic on my behalf – was a fellow named Ernie Shavers. Ernie Shavers was sitting in the dressing room, and I saw him taping his hands, and he has a very high voice, and he goes, “Thank you, Mr. Stallone, for this opportunity. We’ll get in there and spar a little bit.” He was very cordial, and he had this really high voice. But I watched him tape his hands with air conditioning duct tape, and I’m going, “Oh my God.” So he gets in the ring, and I’ll never forget this, he hits me on the shoulder so hard that I capsize, go against the ropes, fall down to the ground, and I started to almost laugh hysterically, like when you hit your shin against a pipe. I never felt … I said, “Was there something in your glove?” Then his manager pulls me aside, and said, “Seriously, they don’t know how to pull their punches.” I said, “But he’s not even trying hard!” He said, “Oh, we have trouble in the gym because he actually breaks guys’ jaws off the hinges, that’s how hard he hits.” So I said, “He’s out.”

So I got a pansy like Mr. T. (Laughs) He was a vacation compared to this. And then I tried one more time, and I got in the ring with Roberto Duran. He stood in one spot, to prove a point, and every time I threw a punch, he would slip and bang me, and bang me, to the body, that the next day my arms were green and purple. I looked like bad cheese.

Good find on that quote my man....:good yeah...well i respect Stallone for getting in the ring with those guys and being honest about, not like a guy like russel crowe...also the guy who said stallone could handle himself..i think he could aganst your average regional amature and im sure he learned enough boxing to handle a guy on the street...these where just great fighters he was sparring with thats all.

Oh the reason i mention Stallone as being a more decent guy then Russel Crowe is because of what I heard Crowe say on the Charlie Rose show. He was talking about Ciderella Man, and how he supposdly was so much like Braddock. Rose asked him in what way he was alike and crowe said something like "well size, style speed, power, though I have a bit more speed and power then he had..." he actually said that, and i was like HOLY ****, you really think that? Know I now that Braddock wasnt a all time great...and maybe modern fighters would have a huge advantage over a fighter from the 30's....thats all fine, but to even imagine that Crowe would do anything but get his jaw smashed by Braddock is a joke. And at that point I gained a new level of disgust for Crowe, and I would really love to meet him some day have him give me a excuess...anyhow...thanks everyone so far on this post..interesting stuff.

just one more thing...i noticed..and some of you guys noticed as well..how Duran is close to the same size as Rocky/sly, yet in Rocky 5, Stallone doesnt look much smaller then tommy morrison....I think this was due to the fact that, for one, at that point Stallone was bigger...lots of lifting and some of the juice, plus he wore a sweat shirt in most of the movie that made him look bigger..who knows..might have had shoulder pads in it or something....also he had on boots all through the movie..that most likely had lifts in them...anyhow....

They sure did in Philly in the 70's when I was there.:rastaAnd most fighters go for broke a lot in sparring to not get used to pulling shots for real.:hat
