How did gavin Rees get a world title shot to begin with

Why the hell did that idiot leave the best promoter in the world to go with Calzaghe, a complete newb. Some people have no sense.

 

M'Baye was not a big draw in his own country or anywhere else so had to take a payday where he could, Warren needed to put something on one of his undercards worth watching, probably offered him a decent figure to put his belt up against Rees, who suprised pretty much everyone, probably M'Baye too by putting in a better performance than anyone thought he was capable of.

 

Thats funny because Watson got stopped when he was at his most aggressive:nut

 

Might be getting this wrong but wasn't him and Pryce side lined during the whole Calzaghe/Warren court case for some reason.

I never regarded M'Baye highly but never expected him to be tested by Rees. So unexpected was the performance that I remember my Dad and I shouting at the tv screen urging Rees to run for the last 3 rounds...

In fact, Rees was considered such an unlikey victor that some at the time openly expressed doubts on this forum about how geniune the contest was...

 

Rees got a title shot with a combination of having a good promoter, being a little lucky and the fact that there's about 80 different 'world' champions at any given time means a hell of a lot of underserving champions and even more undeserving contenders. From there though he put on a good performance against one of the weaker champions and pulled off a pretty good upset.

 

Rees seems to be always game in the ring, I think the way he gets bashed/mocked is perhaps sometimes unfair, at least the guy tries.

 

Yeah the **** tries his heart out and took his big opportunity when it came so he deserves hue credit for that. Also I think he takes John Murray.

 

Yeah, Im no fan at all, but I have warmed to him a little lately.... he gives his best from what I've seen, and against Watson, first few rounds he looked awesome. I really think a fight between him and Murray would be good. He could give Murray some real problems early on. If he implements the in/out bursts that he did against Watto, Murray could easily get frustrated, would be good viewing I feel and probably the only Murray fight I can genuinely say I'd be looking forward to of late.

 

Rees is one of the most underrated boxers on the forum.

 

Warren was co-promoting M'Baye at the time. Rees did well in that fight, if there was only one World title like there should be, then he would've just beaten a top ten guy deservedly, people invest too much in titles, so what if he won one; they mean nothing!

It was a good performance though against someone who was supposedly a notch above, fair play to Rees. He can still do alright at 135lbs IMO.

 

Actually hes a decent bloke .. i met him at the Calzaghe v kessler match up ! ... he'd had a few as we all had but he was up for a laugh and deffo just one of the lads.... alot nicer than sdome primadonnas i know !

 

Rees last performance has certainly swung my opinions of him. Thought he looked very good in the first 5-6 rounds. His speed looked noticeably better down at 135 IMO and his jab was excellent, didn't think he would be outboxing Watson comprehensively and although he had a few rough patches in the middle rounds he got his second wind and finished the contest emphatically.

As for how he got his title shot? No idea. His record was probably worse that JCC Jr. was at the same stage. Onwards and upwards for Rees now though, can't wait for his next outing.

 

atschDid Rees not prove anything by winning the fookin thing, how's about giving the boy credit for winning the title at an unaturally high weight and giving a good performance against Kotelnik trying to defend.

Why not give him some credit for beating the most accomplished Prizefighter field ever at an even higher weight (142lbs) and doing it with ease??

Hows' about giving the boy credit for being more than happy to step back for domestic honours and winning a ******* against a good fighter in Watson, how many other former world champs do this?? hardly any as they believe its beneath them.

I definitely believe Rees would control the first half of the fight but i didnt like him wincing when Watson nailed him with body shots, that doesnt bode well in a fight against Murray.
