How did Mikey Garcia become so highly rated?

How can you diss Mikey's resume and call GRJ a good win. GRJ has been around soo long now, he disappears out of the limelight, then pops up out of nowhere fighting TBA's. Sometimes I'm watching undercards whilst waiting for the main card to start, and I'm shocked to see him in the ring because I had no idea he was fighting. As for the reason Mikey has become so highly rated, it is because almost no one in any division can claim to be king with Usyk being one of the few exceptions, as well as Chocolatito.

You mentioned Linares as a good win, I'll tell you why to many he may seem like a good win. He got blasted out by Salgado after a punch that looked partially blocked, had he won that fight he would have gotten blasted in the first round by Uchiyama in the same manner. He moved up another division, Uchiyama and Gamboa were both there later on and big names, and had he fought them, once again they would have done a Salgado/Thompson/Cano impression on him. Instead he moved up again and after another lost, they matched him up with undefeated targets to rebuild him and then sent him after the belt held by the Brits.

What his handlers did was find the right opponents, and champions for him to fight. Then he went on and fought Loma after his career had been revived, and that fight allowed both of them to showcase their skills. This is quality match making, but it required careful maneuvering to get him their in the first place.

If he had fought all the big punchers at the top, his career would have been over ages ago. If he moved down to 130 right now after the Cano KO, Machado, Berchelt, Tank and Corrales will knock him down with the first decent shot they land on him, then he'll get stopped again. Funny thing about those 4 names I just mentioned at the top of the 130 division, not a single one of them has fought each other as of yet.

Promoters and managers are doing what they are suppose to do, that in combination with all the belts, the money involved, and extra divisions over the years has made it easier to manufacture champions to the point that it is making boxing a joke. This is happening on every level, there are almost no real champs, just carefully matched belt holders with a ton of hype sprinkled on top. It is also these fighter's livelihood, so even though it sucks I can't hate them for it.

4 division champ, has not been close to being beat, daring to be great in fighting his next fight 2 divisions above his current weight class. Classic boxer puncher. Great accuracy. Good defense. Good Power. Good timing. Good movement. I dont see why he wouldnt be rated so high. Family name helps too I'm sure. He's not athletically special but he's text book, stays calm, doesn't waste much, and sticks to the game plan. I'd say, sure, he belongs up there.

This is a good post. He really has not fought greats guys that is for sure, and his titles were easy to get because he fought the weak champs. Back when Hearns or Arguello or Duran went for 4 it was much harder. Boxing was a tougher sport then, but today you can fight guys who are just average fighters and win titles. It is a shame really.

It has more to do with Spence being green and very overrated. Mikey picked Spence for a reason.

PAC is old and way past prime, but is very experienced and has a straight left that would give Mikey all kinds of problems, Crawford has an extremely long reach and unlike Easter he knows how to use it, and Porter has an iron chin and would be charging at Mikey like a wild bull for 12 rounds.

Spence on the other hand has a very suspect chin, mediocre stamina, and very poor defense. Although Spence has the power to knock Mikey out I think Mikey’s footwork and timing is going to make landing clean very difficult for Spence.

thats what separates the knowledgeable fans from the rest. some can see quality in a fighter without relying completely on boxrec. ive been saying mikey is top 3 p4p for a couple yrs now, some fans dont even think he belongs in the top 10 right now. im pretty sure time will once again prove who sees reality through his own eyes, and who sees it through someone elses.

I love watching the guy fight. His timing and movement are next level... He's able to back guys down and turn them around while controlling distance. Plus, he's got power and wants the KO.

Loma vs. Mikey would be FOTY.... that's the fight he should've made instead of Spence. While he can compete with Errol, he's going to have to box super defensively and stay hyperalert at all times. Could be a dull fight.

    Two reasons:

    1. Early in Mikey’s career he was promoted by Bob Arum, who had him near the top of p4p lists of all leading media outlets and poised to become a PPV star; and

    2. A large contingent of posters on this site are still upset that they were wrong about Spence-Brook, and Mikey Garcia is their latest hope to beat Spence and prove that somehow Spence did not deserve his win over Brook. They pray on their knees every day, with tears in their eyes, that someone will beat Spence.

i think its crazy hes taking this massive fight. he really wants to tests himself. to me at this point of his career he should be at 140lbs. lots of good fights he could of made there., but he really wants to challenge himself.

First of his best win is Salido not Broner, second not many feather weights in history do very good at higher weights, you will see he's special after the Spence fight..

Mikey's been on people's radar for a long time now. It may seem like he just popped out of nowhere because of his hiatus but he was doing some great work prior to it, beating the relevant champs, moving up and doing it effortlessly.

Also, a lot of people don't just look at names on the resume when rating a fighter, I've been hyped about Mikey because of his skillset, power and boxing IQ. You can tell he's got that real quality (the kind that only top of the chain elite boxers have) just by the way he fights.

Exactly, you’re completely deluded. Mikey has fought no one and Spence is going to destroy him. Don’t disappear when it happens.

Power? What quality fighters has he knocked out? He has timing and pushing power. He’s slow and he isn’t concussive. Compare Mikey against Martinez vs Loma vs Martinez. Even compare them against Salido. Loma rocked and hurt Salido, despite being smaller. Same size Garcia timed him to repeatedly knock him down, never hurt him, and was getting beaten up when it was stopped. Everybody looks at boxrec, if you actually look at Mikey fight and take everything in context you’re looking at an average fighter. He has fought no one, and lost rounds against nobodies. He is certainly not elite, I’ve been saying it for a long time. When I watch him fight I can see how average he is, he is Danny Garcia 2.0 with careful matchmaking. Spence is going to obliterate this dude, even if Mikey is dosing with Conte.

People have forgotten that Salido gave Garcia hell in the later rounds. Salido fought his way back into the fight and Garcia had to do a lot of holding to keep Salido off of him.
(Garcia did arguably win every round tho. Just wanted to point out that Salido deserves some credit)
