Rafael Herrera was the only man to beat the great Ruben Olivares twice without losing to him. Olivares was pretty much at his peak by the time he met with Herrera. What was it that Herrera had that Olivares could not overcome? Could Olivares ever be able to beat Herrera on any other given time or did Herrera just have a style that was all wrong for him?

Ruben was not at his peak when he duked it out with Herrera. He was ‘done like dinner’ at 118 when they met. Moreover, he had really been hitting the party circuit. Moreover, Herrera, IMO, was an all time great at bantam and was one of the strongest at 118 I’ve seen. So it shouldn’t have been a shock to see something like this coming, although to the fans it certainly was. Both peak, I would pick Olivares, but Rafael was something in his own right.

Olivares was notorious for his partying so perhaps by the time he fought Herrera his partying habits and troubles with weight took a toll on him. Herrera was by no means an average fighter, he was very good and skillful operator. You would think that someone that has Olivares' number would have more appreciation but it seems like he still doesn't get the respect he deserves. He was a very underrated fighter and it would have been interesting to have seen him face Carlos Zarate while he was still coming up.
