Hopkins can sell when against the right opponent. Dirrell is still young and hasn't really hit the big time yet and w win over Bute would have got him there.
Live attendance and TV numbers are 2 different things.:tong Pascal-Hopkins 1, for instance, made Showtime's best ratings in 3 years.:good And even though Dirrell is not really a big name, a fight between 2 Americans normally means more Americans watching (Quebecers or Brits can't watch the fight on SHO anyways).:deal
Not to be picky but the negociations in the article are behind us. Bute and Ward would have fought on the same card in Oakland to hype a Las Vegas show. I don't understand Ward. First, he wants Bute to face a top 3 opponent and then he wants him to fight in Oakland. Do you really think Froch would have accepted to fight in Oakland? Of course not. Ward probably wanted his buddies from the Dirrell family to fight Bute in front of a miserable audience. If his promoter had come with that idea sooner, maybe it could had be done but instead, they yelled everywhere they were not interested by Bute until he faces strong opponents. In my book, Anthony Dirrell doesn't fit with that definition. Andre Dirrell has to make a real comeback before calling the shots so he doesn't fit neither. Oh also, Showtime has the right to equal any HBO offer. Since Bute still has one fight with Showtime, it will be interesting to see what will happen with Ward. Who will be Ward's next opponent? Hopkins? Don't think so. Martinez promoter already said no many times. Andre Dirrell doesn't want the fight. Ward says he will be a TV fighter but who is he going to fight beside Bute? Chad Dawson? Jean Pascal? Who has a name big enough for HBO to open their wallet? Ward's next fight could be on Showtime after all.
Now that Hopkins is the oldest boxer to gain a belt, I don't think he will do great numbers anymore. After all, Hopkins-Dawson was a pretty big fight and not much people bought it, right? And that farce won't help Hopkins to sell more next time.
I live about 45 miles away from Staples Center and didn't go to the fight. I didn't buy the PPV either. Same for the rest of my friends. Hopkins and Dawson didn't even consider booking the rematch in a 20,000 person venue.
Yeah it is a boxing forum, not a tv network forum. A true boxing fan doesn't give a damn what network shows a fight. The only important thing is that good fights get made and Showtime was on this occasion not wanting to show a good matchup. It's their network and their decision. Boxing shouldn't be restricted and dictated by networks. I'm a dickhead for making a fair and logical point? So be it.
EPIX had three channels, show good movies, many orginal. They are showing a lot of very good fights that HBO (Home Buttocks Office) and Showtime are boycotting. It so appears that Ward refused to allow Bute to fight in his tournament, then would not allow Showtime to show this fight either. Ward refused to fight Bute. Ward was the only one in the tournament who never had to travel................Ward does not believe in a level playing field.
