He was born as Charles L Liston. (I am not sure what the middle L stands for)

But how did the nickname "Sonny" come about?

    A very good question.

His wife only called him Charles.
His good friends called him T.C. for Top Cat.

It was "sunny" for his general disposition. Then they changed it at Ellis Island.

    Truth,

While in prison, in Jefferson City, Missouri.
Charles Liston enrolled in the prison boxing program.

It was run by Joe Gonzalez, who called Charles Liston 'Sonny Boy'.
