How did Sumbu Kalambay get knocked out by Nunn like that?

It just seems strange to me. He goes 12 and 15 rounds with Graham, Barkley, and McCallum, yet he gets knocked the **** out in the first round with a single shot, by the likes of NUNN. Nunn wasn't even known for his power. And it's not like Kalambay was past his best either, he goes on to decision McCallum and gets a few other nice wins, as well.

 

I think it was a combination of things. Usually he fought in Europe, this time he fought in the US and he looked out of sorts. Also he fought a southpaw and was caught cold in round one. It was an unexpected punch. Nunn also was just as fast as Kalambay compared to the other guys Kalambay fought. Usually Kalambay was faster than them all.

 

He just happened to get caught by a perfect punch. It happens. Nunn seems a pretty bad match up for him in general, even if the 1st round KO was a fluke.

 

Nunn was too big and fast in a way. Kalambay was not going to outbox Nunn. Stylistically it was not good for Kalambay who beat Dewitt,Barkley and McCallum.

 

It's one of those abberations that occur in the sport..based on the fact that it's possible for anyone to be knocked out when the perfect storm of conditions and situations happen. This is why when a thread about Oliver McCall, for instance, comes up from time to time asking who would be able to ko him, I always say that no man is immune from being knocked out..it's possible for a fighter not known for having power to score a kd or a ko over a fighter with an acknowledged "iron jaw" just by capitalizing on the perfect moment when a guy's chin is caught by a perfectly timed and well executed punch.

 

Such a pity this happened. Would have been a close, fascinating chess match otherwise, and would have really tested Kalambay as a fighter, having to go through a style which didn't suit him.

 

When I was watching it the other day not knowing the result, I was expecting just that, Scientist. To be honest I think Kalambay may have had a chance to outbox Nunn.

Foot positioning. Look where Nunn is when he throws the shot. Sumbu cansee it coming, but is in no position to defend.

Sumbu was still the better fighter with the better resume.

i dont think it's right to call it a "fluke".

 

Not a 'fluke', but not indicative of either fighters abilities IMO.

 

A southpaw left down the pipe is the most brutal of punches to be caught by and Nunn just manouvered into it quickly.

Other than that he may have been caught cold

 

well, i'd give Nunn full credit for proving his ability in that fight.

but i don't hold it against Kalambay much . i dont consider it a really bad loss - yes, he was blown away in 1 round with 1 punch but not outclassed. it wasnt like tyson-spinks or liston-patterson where one guy is just blown aside in such a manner that you can almost guarantee he'd never be able to do much better (proven in the case of liston-patterson 2 !)
