Duran won it going away. I guess 10-5 or 9-6 is okay, but an argument can be made that both scores are generous. Duran consistently beat Leonard to the punch. He was the effective aggressor throughout. Only a few times did he coast, and Leonard more often than not took those times to coast, too. Leonard had his moments (he is, after all, a fine boxer), but Duran almost always turned them around to his advantage. When Leonard would use his size to turn Duran against the ropes, Duran would turn Leonard back around. Leonard looked so much bigger that to see him bullied around the ring was astonishing. Duran dotted every exchange, except one at the end of a round, with the punctuation. Duran was pummeling Leonard's body. It was sick. Both sides of the rib cage and right in the belly. Leonard defense consisted of holding incessantly (Leonard kept the ref busy all night), while Duran was able to block Leonard's punches with his shoulders and arms. If you watch Leonard's bolo from the inside angle you can see the blow bounding off Duran's gloves. That was typical of the fight. When Duran was hit, he often turned his head at the last minute to negate the power. He was rarely hit flush. Leonard did some shining with flurries, but Duran was having none of it. Duran took Leonard to school. What a brilliant boxer! The commentary was indeed atrocious. Embarrassingly bad. Whoever that was with Pacheco was an idiot, and Pacheco was little better. They were screaming about punches that would knock anybody out. Well, if that were true, somebody would have been knocked out! Duh! At several points, Pacheco's sidekick was talking about things that weren't actually happening. He would turn to Pacheco and ask him what he thought about this or that. He reminded my of the character in Best in Show. Remember that? LOL! Both of them were sniffing Leonard's jock strap. Pacheco seems to think it's his duty to make a fight seem much closer than it is. He has done this a lot. A good example was Whitaker-Chavez. Whitaker boxed brilliantly. Chavez didn't win many rounds on my card (even though he was competitive in most), but you wouldn't know it from the commentary. They were talking about a draw towards the end, and then when it was declared a draw they started decrying the decision! Czyz was in there, too, which always ramps up the idocy level. Commentary is one area where boxing is worse than any other sport. They very rarely have people in there who know anything about boxing except what they are given to read off of fact sheets. I've never understood why they can't find people who understand the sport. There are exceptions, but it is overall pretty damned terrible.
i have to say it was pritty funny when benitez says hes not impressed by either and he'd KO both in 2 rounds, and at the end of the fight duran turns to him and gestures to benitezes that vintage roberto right there
It's been a long time since I saw this fight, but I remember scoring it clearly in favor of Duran. Duran was a close but clear winner on my scorecard. Duran was very, very impressive that night.
I loved that commentary: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nc8aimswtmI&feature=PlayList&p=55BD08DDD5AEBE7C&index=43
Don't remember exactly, but i know i had Duran a few points ahead at the end, if i remember correctly it's courtesy of good work early on isn't it? You watched it lately?
havent seen it in a while no i remember Dura winnign everything early and then ken realising he gave away them rounds came on abit but was a good biut down at the 13th, ken reckons he could have won it on points what do you think
Not in my opinino, he would have had to maybe win the remaining rounds and i just couldn't see Duran allowing it. I know we both think the world of Ken but i just don't see it. What's your feeling? There's always that thing about Duran not giving the rematch, Ken was a proud warrior and dearly wanted a chance at revenge
i dont think ken could have won even if he KD'D duran i think he should have got a rematch but in retrospect it might have been better he never got one as i think Duran would have done alot better as he constantly improved after that fight, you read his book where he goes over to the states to find Duran thats quite funny i think if anyone ken should have got a rematch with is Isimatsu as taht fight was close and ken had a bad eye (havent saw it yet just going on reports)
