kept timing it and catching it with his glove and slapping it down. feignts, head movement and footwork helped too.
:good What was interesting to me was that in the first two rounds, Ward was on the defensive, Dawson was coming forward and his size seemed imposing (as it did against Hopkins). But apparently Ward was just feeling things out and Dawson's confident stalking of the first two rounds did not last.
His upper body movement, footwork, and speed made him too elusive for Chad, which made Dawson reluctant to even commit to it.
Exactly, I felt the same way, the way Dawson was pushing off of him in the clinch. Ward took a break from inside work until later after the damage had been done more thoroughly, by which time Dawson was purely on the defensive, unable to get off and measure as he flinched from feints time and time again.
Another thing I just noticed looking at rounds 1 and 2 is that Ward was coming in low with a lead right to the body, underneath Dawson's jab. I think an issue Dawson has is that he can become paralyzed by an opponent that attacks him successfully. Pascal had him in this paralysis mode as well. Dawson has two modes -- an offense mode and a defense mode and he seemingly can't switch between them.
I actually never connected the lead rights to the body as a counter for his jab, but you're right, he was ducking right under his jab to land it! Great point. Feel free to add it to my thread :hey http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/showthread.php?t=428651
Bit random but I always think the jab is the most versatile weapon even when facing a taller opponent. Was looking at this earlier today and despite holding a size disadvantage, Valdes was still outboxed by Moore who from what it looks like with the footage given put on a clinic on the bigger guy. Best display of an upjab I've seen maybe Joe Louis had a better one. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fi66CQ_ivDg[/ame] Notice when getting close he uses mainly the jab and when inside he fires shorter punches such as uppercuts. He'll turn him and pivot making his opponent's back face the center of the ring. Moore actually wanted to fight outside but was not shy to go inside once Valdes was on the ropes from the footage given. Of course Valdes used a brawling approach from here instead of Dawson's boxing one but to outjab a significantly bigger opponent is still impressive to witness. Notice with both is that bodypunching is still very significant to the smaller fighters. I loved Ward's straight to the body against Dawson which he usually used when Dawson was near/against the ropes though it wasn't limited to just that such as the beginning of rd 7 shows. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JgkCOO7BkUM[/ame] He'll throw a few jabs mainly weak ones just to gauge distance and keep Dawson alert and sneak in a hard straight to the body. In the clinch he'd go to the body then change his position with his impressive footspeed/footwork to go back to jabbing. Footage a bit grainy but still proves what I mean.
He kept knocking it down and slipping it. He then proceeded to make Chad afraid to throw it by drilling Chad with quick, sharp lefts.
It is when he'd been neutralized before in his natural weight class by another ambush fighter with inferior skills. Interesting observations; Moore was such a beast.

Basically, this. ^ Also, Ward was fighting a lot on the inside. A very interesting new tactic. It's pretty hard to jab a guy when he's right there in your face. Chad might have done well with some hard uppercuts, but he never let them go. WTF is wrong with his corner?
