Also, one has to consider the source. Most of these announcers are clueless.
They are very good at being ANNOUNCERS, not so good at analysis.

Ward fighting inside is not at all a "new" tactic (Abraham, Bika, Froch, Kessler). Dawson couldn't throw it because Ward was parrying it and turning away from Chad's punching angle.

That can be true, but I liked how Kellerman was highlighting Ward's outside lead foot positioning against Dawson.

It's new in that Ward is now throwing a lot more hard punches when up close.

Your other point is valid, though, for the most part. Gotta' watch the fight again, but I remember Ward just standing toe-to-toe a lot as well. I think the pressure is what mostly shut Dawson down.

It's definitely what finished the job. And you have a point, Ward is becoming more destructive on the inside.

    A few of observations -

    * Dawson is not known to be a jab spammer. He can and will use a jab to set stuff up if he's Pressing Forward. But he doesnt throw it out defensively. A boxer that uses a jab offensively but not defensively will stop throwing a jab if he's being beat to the punch by another jab or anticipating the opponent in jumping in (which a defensive jab can/will disrupt)

    * Ward is the master of spacing. A boxer who doesnt spam his jab will generally wait till his opponent is in range to feasibly cause contact with the jab, instead of being just a deterrent punch. Ward stayed on the outside or backed up in the early rounds to take away spacing. He also would jump in to take away in spacing.

    * Ward jumping in and mauling causes most fighters to change attack behavior. They become a defensive counter-puncher instead of a pressing forward offensive fighter. If they dont use the jab as a defensive weapon in the first place, it will NOT be there when they change in a defensive/countering behavior. Ward does this to his opponents from the mid round till the end... Dawson dropped his jab behavior to anticipate in using a counter uppercut or a counter hook instead against the jump in attacks...

    * When Ward knows he's got his opponent mentally switched, then he knows he can dictate the terms of his own jab spacing. While the opponent is hesistant to throw a punch in order to counter the "rush in", now Ward is literally free to jab and "pot-shot" his opponent to death, creating openings and disrupting any possible counter against his impending "rush-ins"....

alot of Dawson fans say his stoppage is due to his supposed "weight draining"....

Umm, for years, Ward has said he has been switching over from boxer to "fighter", with the desire to be able to close out hurt fighters. Still he hadnt been able to do that, and had been called a "featherduster" by haters...

For the first time ive heard from his corner, they instructed him to really start sitting down on his punches.... and he was

In the near future, I expect Ward to start committing more power into his punches in the latemid to late rounds as his opponent is weakened....

As Dawson said in the postfight interview.... Ward was faster and Stronger than expected - Ward was sitting down on his shots....

Ward neutralized Chad's jab when Chad agreed to 168.
