iv'e been watching boxing since pac vs barrera but the moment that really hooked me up was mosely vs vargas that also was the time that vargas became one of my fav boxers because he was KTFOed.. so i watched most of his prev fights (if available), highlights at youtube. vargas kinda sucks though
I`m not a hardcore fan of boxing, i have plenty of room for other sports too. But boxing tops the list, and like many other members on here it began with Tyson.
my dad was a big boxing fan always talking about robinson, ali, patterson, moore and liston. i became hooked in the late 70,s after seeing a magazine about pre leonard vs hearns. i then realised leonard wasn,t the only great fighter in the world
i finally got into boxing after watching a sparring video of James Toney..i was a mma fan first and still am..i never really understood boxing and i'll be honest i thought it was really boring..BUT NOW I AM A HUGE FAN !..i freaking love it....it's such a beautiful sport...i never miss friday night fights on ESPN and solo boxeo on telefutura
Boxed a little when I was at school, watched the big fights Tyson, Oscar Kostya etc... But three years ago a local newsagent was selling a Hagler VS Vito dvd for $2 , went back the next day and bought another couple dvd's and been hooked ever since.
My dads mate Prince Rodney was a fighter in the 80s.I got into boxing through watching his fights. He won the British light middle title twice.I watched boxing a little bit before that but following his career is what got me into it seriously.
What really got me into boxing was when Tito Trinidad came to my school which got me interested on his upcoming fight with Vargas. Saw that fight and been watching boxing ever since.
Basically for me it was Trinidad-De La Hoya. Not a great fight but the buzz was so much before the fight, that after I saw it (not knowing anything about scoring as a 12/13 yo boy, I just thought Trinidad made him run, of course he won. But I didn't stay hooked on just being a Tio fan, I washed all the fights I could, seeing Shane Mosely/De Le Hoya, watching Panchito Bojado, Roy Jones jr, etc.
Geez, after reading some of the posts on this subject, I feel like Grandpa here. Many of you state you've been a fan since the early 2000's while I started watching fights on TV back in the late 50's. Gillette was the sponsor and they would televise live cards from Madison Square Garden back then and I'd be sitting there on Friday nights with my dad and uncles watching the fights on a black and white TV. On many Saturday afternoons ABC's Wide World of Sports would have title fights and I'd watch as many of those as I could. I loved the heavyweight division for the power but gravitated toward the welterweight/middleweight division for a good mix of power and speed. Then along came a guy named Roberto Duran and I got to liking the smaller guys. I've seen a lot of great fighters over the years and many will be remembered for the wars they fought. I miss the days of great title fights free on TV. Now it has all turned into a cash cow for the cable networks with PPV at $50 and up per viewing. Now, it's all about the MONEY. At least the fighters at the top are getting the type money they deserve for all the hard work it takes to get to that level for the few years they can maintain it.
Followed boxing casually as a kid when Ali was having all his great fights in the 70s, but really got hooked by the first Sugar Ray Leonard-Thomas Hearns fight. I was already following boxing pretty closely by the late 70s, but this fight really cinched it for me.
