Couple of points for Giardello.Sometimes a draw. Very close hard fought bout of course the sensationalised claims of robbery in the **** Carter film were nonsense, but i've never thought it was anywhere near a wide win or masterclass performance from Giardello as many started to claim in reaction to that film. Joey was still a fine fighter, but a faded one who's reflexes and speed had diminished. He looked more like Minter from the Antuofermo fights here...and not the more reflexively gifted slip and counter oriented fighter from the late 50s. Carter showed a lack of 15 round experience in his poor pacing and some plodding feet...he let Giardello turn him often and control too much space despite getting the better of many of the exchanges. An interesting fight.
I scored it a close but clear win for Giardello. I thought he showed his age in the fight and it was there for the taking but Carter simply didnt press enough. It was Carter's fight to be had and he didnt take it. Carter even admitted after the fight that he was worried about going 15 rounds so he paced himself too much allowing Giardello to take rounds he might not have taken otherwise.
